Because British people speak from the tip of their tongue.
Americans, especially Southerners, use the middle of their tongue and flatten it a little bit. Its easier to sing this way. Try it and you will see the difference.
Most people flatten their tongue when they sing, including the British, and thats why they sound American

When you sing, you stretch out the sounds of the words you're saying, so everyone ends up sounding the same. Though there are some British bands who still sound British when they sing, like The Kooks and in some of Coldplay's songs.

I've always wondered that some thing. Maybe it's that we sound British when we sing and we just don't know it. The R is not as pronounced when sung, just like the British say it.

Same with the Irish.
Bono speaks with a noticeable Irish accent, but it doesn't come out in his music.
