The Myan calendar ends on 2012 or very nearly thereabout. The Myans were the most accurate time-keepers in the known world as far as calendars are concerned. So why does it stop abruptly on 2012 (by Gregorian calendar standards)? I need opinions....I know what I think is going to happen, but I want input from total strangers. If you're an occult schollar, even better.

The specific answer to your question would be both. The Mayans believed that the Universe and all existence ran in cycles of 10,000 years. The beginning of each cycle is preceeded by the total destruction of the universe as it was known in the previous cycle. By their calendar, the current cycle will end in 2012 and the next cycle will begin; so it's both an ending and a beginning.

I just thought I would throw this out there, since everyone else has thrown the explainations out there...but the world as we know it is, according to the Mayan calender, will end on December 21, 2012, the Winter Equinox.
Then the new world will start over again.
On a personal note, the world's going to begin 10 days before I turn 30. Guess you could say that would be the end of the world to me lol.

Pagan minister here, i do not know if that qualifies me as an Occult scholar but here goes.

the Mayans believed that time ran in cycles. so 2012 should be a new beginning.

However. the Native Americans have a similar belief structure and many of their shaman believe that the prophesies of the "Earth Changes" will begin to unfold at this time. basically the earth will reject the humans that refuse to live in harmony with it and will use rapid climate changes and other natural events to destroy their technology. if we were to loose out technology today only 1/3 of the people on the planet would survive the winter. and many would be too weak to survive the spring.

some of the people that follot the ancient Myan religion believe that the Feathered God Quezithorel (i know i spelled that wrong)
will return in 2012. the Myan Gods were some very brutal gods and they all demanded Human sacrifice.

as for what i believe will happen, i think that over time nature will take back the coastlines. flight will become dangerous as things like the Bermuda triangle will start to happen all over the oceans.
trade between countries will grind to a halt. most third world people will die. cities will fall into disrepair and crumble over time as people move to the country to seek a quiet and good life.
as people move out of the cities street gangs will take them over. they will expand and try to take what the homesteaders have.
people will form into tribes to protect themselves. and a return to living in harmony with the earth will occur as a simple means of survival.

For the Quiche Mayan historical/mythological perspective
read the "Popul Vuh"
and, yes , as has been stated...the winter solstice 2012 marks the end of this world age....so....make that holiday season a memorable one....christmas, solstice, new years [if we're still around]...party hearty....
