i would start the pills on the sunday after your period. then your following period will start on the 3rd day after you take your last "hormone" pill (your period should be on wednesday or thursday depending on if you take your pill in the morning or at night)

You just had a baby 3 weeks ago, and your doctor is giving you birth control? Just curious, why? Are you going to breastfeed?
If so, do not start the pill!!!!! The pill, even though it is a low-dose, will dry up your milk supply. I know, because this happened with my second baby.
Is this your first child? If so, remember, you will probably bleed post-partum for at least 4 to 6 weeks.
That said, if you asked for the 'script, and you are wanting to take the pill because of whatever reason, here's my advice.
I was on this pill before the birth of my first child, and I recommend starting the Sunday after your period starts. In order to make sure it is actually your period, I would not take it until the bleeding stops for at least 1 week. The next time you bleed, that is probably your period and the Sunday after would be a good time to start the pill.
If I were you, and you did not ask for the 'script, I would look for another doctor.
If none of this applies to you, just ignore me. This is one subject that I am absolutely passionate about.

Your fertility cycle is such that you are most fertile in between periods. Or roughly a week and a half after your period ends. So -- that means you spent nine months being pregnant, and had you stayed on your usual cycle and not been pregnant, you would be menestruating roughly two weeks after the birth of the baby. Am I confusing you, or are you with me so far?
Since you had the baby three weeks ago, two weeks ago would have been the start of your next period, and two weeks from now would have been the start of your next period. As you are still bleeding you obviously don't need to start taking it now but likely will after another month. If you are nursing, it becomes really tricky because nursing mothers rarely menestruate, but they can become pregnant. If you aren't nursing, wait until your normal periods resume and then start your birth control. They usually resume about six weeks after birth.
Congratulations on the new baby. You're in for a very interesting time!

I would call the 24 hour nurse
the number will be listed in the phone book under the hospitals listing
It is a free service and you will speak to a nurse
this service is set up for questions like this
I had the same thing happen and the same birth control script I think I started after I stopped bleeding but it was four years ago so I can not be sure I remember I do know=w I called the above and went with whatever they said

If you're still bleeding from having the baby, that isn't your period. I also don't understand why you would go to the doctor three weeks after having the baby. Most of us, I believe, have the after baby visit six weeks after giving birth. (I actually didn't... my visit was 8 weeks after because my daughter was in the hospital when she was six weeks old.)
I would question an OB's skill if he's telling me to start birth control while still bleeding from having the baby. If I were you, I would get a second professional opinion, from someone who is not affiliated with that doctor.
Good luck.

Jaime,
Congratulations on becoming a mom! :-)
As to your question about birth control, since you are still having post-partum bleeding, I would start on the first Sunday after your OB/GYN said you could start. Starting on a specific day always makes it easier for me to remember, but since you may not actually have a period for a little while, especially if you're breastfeeding, it will be less confusing to pick a day and start (which it doesn't to be a Sunday - if you week starts on a Wednesday, you can start on a Wednesday, whatever works for you).
Good luck!

Wait till the bleeding is done and then start on that Sunday. Being a Sunday starter is easier but if you have sex before then use a condom because after having a child for the first couple of weeks you are very fertile so be careful. Good luck!!

no this is not your period start the pill the first day of your first period ( the next time you bleed) and be very very careful birth control takes about 2 months to work properly and it is very very very easy to get pregnant after you have been pregnant use a condom as well for the first two months after you start the pill. PS your breast feeding so it could take awhile to get your period if you get it at all while breast feeding so talk more with your doc about this or count 28 days after your postpartum bleeding ends (i think thats how that works ??)

I was on that birth control. Here's an example.
You get your period on Thurday. You start with the white pills on Sunday.
You get your period on Monday. You wait until Sunday and start the white pills then.
I hope this is making sence! It just makes it so you can regulate the pills properly and get your period on track. I also wanted you to know I've met several people who have gotten pregnant on that pill. When I found out I got a Minera IUD. You can get it as soon as you have your next period and it works great! Contact me if you'd like to know more.
I added the websites just incase you'd like to look or you didn't know about them.
No, the bleeding now is called Lochia. You will know when your period starts.

Start it in 2 weeks as the doc says but don't have sex without protection for at least another 4 weeks when your period starts as normal. Be aware though that if you are breastfeeding this might take a while. Do as the doc says and take extra precautions in the meantime.
Good luck!

no, it's not your period. My doctor told me at 6 weeks, start taking the pills from that Sunday. So if six weeks from birth is on a Tuesday, take them the following Sunday. It will get you back on a cycle.
