DEFINITELY! She can sing the blues in a rock format. Listen To Summertime, Maybe, Little Girl Blues, Ball And Chain. I agree with a couple of the above answers. Melissa Etheridge is NOT a modern day Joplin. No way. Nobody compares.
But if you don't like the blues, you won't like her. Blues is what her life represented. She lived it. She was one lonely alcoholic woman, kind of like Billie Holliday, but it was heroin that did her in.

Janis Joplin's voice came from somewhere down in her gut.
Mostly though, I think she was liked because she came across
as genuine and down to earth. When she sang the blues, you
got the feeling she really knew (from experience) what her song
was all about. Did I like her? You bet. Her song lives on today.
Rock on, Janis, Rock on....

She was an incredible poetic genius. Her mind was uninhibited, unfortunately it took drugs and alcohol to bring that freedom about, but she had so much to say and give to the world.
A modern day equivalent would be Melissa Etheridge, who thankfully shares her beautiful vision without the same mind altering poison.
