Ignore the gun control people...........if guns kill people, then spoons make people fat.
Maybe if we made it possible (tax-wise) for more people (either mother or father) to stay home with their kids, then more parents would know their kids and spot warning signs.

The irony is that if you go to an inner city school, you have to go through a metal detector and there is a city cop on the premises every day. If you go to Columbine or some other rural school, every disaffected geek has access to his daddy's deer rifle and the county sheriff is only an hour away. The only relevant gun control is the gun control at the door to the school. Maybe every high school needs a metal detector.

We live in a different world than it was twenty years ago. Making them safe today requires methods that may not have been used in the past. Today, kids are exposed to more violence through movies, tv, and music and become numb to it. In the past, kids and adults both were horrified by things that today we hear about and hardly bat an eye at. I think we need metal detectors and security guards at every school. That's really the only way to insure weapons aren't brought onto the property.

Schools are as safe as any other public building. It is just that crimes involving children is seen as more heinous than other crimes against people. But the sad fact is that there is nothing that can be done to ensure that mentally ill people will not enter schools, or perpetrate violence, short of turning schools, malls, public buildings etc into armed compounds. And that would be a terrible environment for our children.

We have not adequately addressed troubled teens in school. The kids who commited the atrocity at Columbine were bullied and hated their lives and nobody did anything to help them. Perhaps if we tried harder to be understanding and act like we care about all students and not just the jocks and cheerleaders we can prevent these things before they happen.

Safe enough. If someone in my school really had a dispute with me that he wanted to kill me, he'd probably do it out of school. When something does happen in schools, it just seems like a big deal because it gets so much publicity. I'm sure more people die falling down stairs every year, but no one really considers stairs to be unsafe.

Golly, that question is sure loaded with about 3 hours worth of discussion to scratch the surface of it.
but I will do my best. You are not going to like what I have to say, I warn you up front. it is not popular viewpoint at all.
The first thing you do, is quit letting the schools take more and more of the way we raise our children, as so much garbage. My stepson's principal sent home a how to manual, " honest injun" on how to spend time with your child! not needed and is confusing as all get out for the kid!
the second is to stop telling your kids when they are little that if someone hits them to walk away. i am not a violent person, but if you have someone pick on you, you can't turn and walk away, it makes it worse. I think if from the time they are able to understand, they should be allowed to defend themselves with their fists, not weapons. fists.
If two kids on a playground get into a fight, then the parents should be called and then I think those parents should fix it right then. Let em fight it out or become friends. None of this turn and walk away stuff. Teach them how to stand their ground, and to duke it out when necessary. It will give them confidence that they are men and women, not our babies. they do have to grow up, and it is a mean old world. they have to have the tools to live in it.
If you don't do number two suggestion, the fear and the anger build up in these kids, they are never going to be able to handle the explosion when it happens with their fists, so when they are in the middle of the pre- explosion, they go nuts, I mean mentally ill. they are sick. from fear, from, confusion, from plain old hurting from the mean old world. They get it back on those who have done the hurt to them, in a violent and permanent life destroying incident.
We do not need more security at school, it would not help . Our kids have more knowledge at their fingertips that i will ever have the ability to acess. We need to give them credit for that , while they are sitting in their rooms hiding from the world, they are finding knowledge to help them to be destroyed by the lack of fighting tools we fail to give them, by saying turn andwalk away, You know this is never the answer that works. It just makes them a cowardly person.
I told you people think I am wrong and some applaud and think I am right. But I can survive the ones who say I am wrong and call me a lot of bad names, and send e-mail that is really bad and scary, but I am still typing and not hiding, I know how to put up my dukes for my own survival in this mean old world.

All the posters above me forgot to mention that you can't even legally buy a handgun until you are 21 years old. All of the weapons these children obtained were illegally obtained, either from purchase from a criminal, or from some other source.

Vote in politicians this November that have "social morals" and can get legislation passed that will better educate, make education more affordable, so that the students in this country don't have to feel so hopless about their future and not care about their fate! Being a teen-ager gathering first thoughts about what life will be about under this administration--I'm suprised there aren't more suicides!!!

When GUNS are outlawed -
only outlaws will have guns!!
It is not about guns! If they killed somebody with a hammer would you outlaw hammers!?
Figure out the problem - then you will be able to figure out the solution.
