The answer to this depends on what you want and what you value. If you want to have equal footing from your friends because you value fairness above else, then stop sticking your neck out on the line for them until they show some reciprocation. But if you care more about being a good friend, then continue to do what you do but realize that you can't expect the same from them.
If both are equally important to you, then I suggest you show them that you are a true and loyal friend... to those who are true and loyal to you. Which means you stick your neck out for them one more time and tell them "this is the last time I do this for you if I don't see some reciprocation." You can make favors a gift when you want, but let them know that loyalty has got to be earned!
Good luck.

If you think about it, if you find a vending machine that will always give you whatever you want/ without having to pay, wouldn't you continue to use that machine? Whether it's moral or not?
What are you? You are a person, not a machine, people shouldn't be getting anything from you/ without something in return, in this case it should at least be "respect".

You don't need respect from them... if they're not putting anything into your friendship then you should find some new friends. A friend ship is a 2 way street... if you're putting in all the effort, then it sounds like they could care less about you... that's not fair to you... find some friends who actually care for you.

Sticking up for your friends is an admirable quality (as long as they're not doing something hurtful, dangerous or illegal and you're simply covering for them!).
I don't understand how you get into trouble for being loyal (unless you ARE covering for them for doing something hurtful, etc...).
If they keep letting you down, however, what kind of friends are they and why would you want to get their respect!?

Thank goodness you are getting the education of this now in life! ALWAYS stay out of someones problems! Let them learn their own lessons, you cannot do that for them, likewise you cannot have someone learning your lessons for you as well. If you learn this well now while you are young, you will take that with you into adult life and stay out of your friends problems then also. All of people need others to talk to when things get bad in life but don't expect others to solve the problem for them, they just needed to talk with someone at the time. Use this advise well and you will always remain neutral when they start to look for someone to blame when things go bad! Otherwise its going to be "YOU" who gets all the blame for the wrong going. It will save alot of heart ache later on to be wise to this and stay out of everything!

Be a good friend. Some people just don't appreciate you for who you are, and that isn't your problem. I have the same issue. My friends do not know how much I do for them, but I continue to help them out and stand up for them. If you stick around, they will eventually realize who you are to them, and they will respect you.

Not sure what you do to stick up for everyone, but maybe you need to change friends, to some that don't get into to trouble!

just stop it and tell them you don't appreciate the way that they have been treating you, then stop hanging around them for a short while and then they may begin to appreciate all that you have done for them and may come around if not then find some new friends but don't give more to a friendship than you're getting...

You did stop letting your so-call friends use you. Stop the madness they will respect you if they don't forget about them and move on.
