The only current generation RPG I find fun is FFX. Beyond that, every single RPG on the current generation consoles suck. I bought Star Ocean 3 because Star Ocean 2 is in my top 2 list. SO3 had a great battle system, besides that, everything else was stupid. The item creating, the characters, the story...etc. And an RPG doesnt need perfect graphics, its an RPG, which means good story, battles, characters...etc. Xenosaga is one that is in the Neutral Zone. I have only played the first one, and I currently have not played the 2nd or 3rd. So I cant say for sure.
FFX was fun, and still is. Theres mass side stuff to do.

I purchased Valkyrie Profile 2 and played it for about an hour so far. They changed so many things, that its no longer Valkyrie Profile. The battle and side scroll style is the only thing that reminds me of VP1. I mean, your supposed to learn about characters, see how they die/live before you recruit. In VP 2, its stupid. Ever since Square and enix fused..

Their RPGs have gotten mediocre. Now, I know that they dont really have anything to do with each others games, but, they still went downhill when they became one company. I know im going on and on, but, when Squaresoft was by itself, all the FF's to IX were awesome. X was a definate downgrade, but all the others were so high, that it only went to a great game instead of a perfect game. All the new RPG's are boring, predictable, and all around stupid. I was wondering if anyone else felt the same or am I just a blabbering RPG freak?

I dont mean console ones as a whole, I just mean the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube. The playstation had the best RPG lineup out of every system ever done or that has been done currently. And the problem with those, not really a problem, but they are all going to DS, which is why I think you say that. But I could be mistaken.

Hey, I liked Legend of Dragoon...for a little while. I could never play it again though. My personal favorite is FFVII. Not because everyone else likes it, but because I liked it when it first came out. Now, I like old RPGs like FF2-6, SO1, Wild arms was a great game, Xenogears, etc. I remember when RPG's were fun, now, they suck. I wish Square-enix would come up with something better then anything we've ever seen. But its doubtful becuase there stuck in this, futuristic, computer, space age thing. An RPG needs swords, and armor...none of this, lazer guns and lazer swords...etc. It takes away from the fun.

I have both of the KOTR games. But, I personally thought the game progressed to slow. One game I did like was Star Ocean 2 for choices. I mean there was what, 86 different endings or something. You could play over and over and never get the same one.

Oblivion, though an RPG, in my book its not under said title. its like a Solo Offline, MMORPG. It doesnt have the feel of an RPG. Now im not saying its not fun, but, its strayed away from the RPG genre.

i think the problem is actually because they can make the game prettier with graphics.

seriously. try getting your -average- 15 year old RPG player to play Lufia II on super nintendo. they'll NEVER get through it. why? because the enemy just shakes when it's supposedly attacking you. i'm serious. i have actually encountered this.

my guess is because they are able to make the games prettier, they do. but... they use up so much space detailing the graphics, it doens't leave much room for both game mechanics, and game locations.

as time has moved on, with the younger generation buying into this crap, it sticks. why conceive difficult puzzles, when kids will buy a piece of trash like 'legend of dragoon'?

you messed up. you said the playstation has the greatest line of rpgs.

it was the super nintendo that had the greatest rpg titles

Yea, RPGs have all become Final Fantasy wannabes that focus on graphics rather than story and gameplay. Every once in a while though, a good RPG gets made. Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube is the best RPG I've played since Chrono Trigger for the SNES. Of course, it's a little critical to think that every or even most games that come out should be great. They never have been and never will be. We just have to latch on to those few classics that come out every so often.

My favorite RPG is is Legend of the Dragoon. While the graphics aren't as good as some of the new RPG's, the story line is defantly better. I also love the Parasite Eve games. (1 and 2) The first one more than the 2nd one. Both of these games are on original playstation. I've yet to find a game on any consol that is as good a story line. So I completely agree that they are getting worse and worse. Is it getting to be that time where all we like is games that are "classic"?? Now I know how my parents feel. =|

Well I like "most" games from Square Enix, because they are above the average - but it is true that this developer (and most others - except for Nintendo) tend to focus on pretty graphics and computer-generated cutscenes, instead of creating a kick-*** gameplay.

In the old days of the Super Nintendo, because of limited power and storage, most games had to be innovative to sell and many of the biggest franchises were started during that time period: Legend of Mana, Starfox, Actraiser (when wil Square revive this franchise!!?)..

Some interesting RPGs to be coming are Final Fantasy 12 (10/31/06) and Rogue Galaxy (Jan 07)

You should definitely check out the "Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic" games. Granted not everyone likes Star Wars, but many who don't have still liked the game based solely on how well it was made. You become stronger as you progress throughout the game but your decisions also affect your companions (in the second one). Your decisions determine your alignment with the force as well. In the second one there are special classes of Jedi and Sith that can only be achieved at one extreme end of the force (light vs. dark). I've beat the first one and I'm currently working on the second one.

Yeah I hear ya! My problem is that they are all just about graphics because it is on console, and they leave out what makes an RPG great. Still they are not all bad, they are just get worse every time.

To tell you the truth, console RPGs do suck. Mostly, good RPGs are found on portables (and by portables, I mean Nintendo ones.)
