Some antidepressants are safe for a few months during pregnancy, but the not the whole 9 months. When I was pg I had to go off my meds & was told that no antidepressant is safe during pregnancy. So I did some research on it & couldn't find any that are safe.

I took Paxil with both of my pregnancies. Both times I felt guilty and tried going off when I was 3 months along. Both times I had to go back on after the second trimester because I couldn't cope. So both children were getting the antidepressant for 6 months of my pregnancies. Both my babies had some breathing difficulties at birth, which is likely a result of the Paxil. Other than that, they are both healthy and happy. I might add though that God delivered me from depression and anxiety and after 7 years of being on antidepressants, (with many failed attempts at going off on my own) I've now been off them for 8 months!!! All the glory to Him.

I am TTC and checked with my OB/Gyn about this very same question. He said that the Wellbutrin (sp) that I take is perfectly safe to take all through pregnancy and nursing. You may have to do additional research because some studies say no and others say yes that it is safe. I have been on anti-depressants for 6 yrs (not during pregnancy) but experienced bad post partum depression wit both of my children. I shared these concerns with my Dr. so he is aware that my depression condition could worsen. My hubby doesn't know this, but it is the one thing I am afraid of with trying for another child.

It is important to be sure you are healthy both physically and mentally, and he/she can help with your concerns. They can ease your mind, which will help you relax and your body will be better able to assist in the developement of the baby. I wish you all the best!

With my 2nd pg, I took Zoloft the whole time. I was worried that the dr would tell me to stop, but he said there was nothing wrong with it. Actually, both my dr's told me that...the one who prescribed it and my OB/GYN. This pg (I'm currently 7.5 weeks) I made it clear to dr that I was taking it and he said it was fine again. It says on the Rx bottle that maybe you shouldn't take it during the last trimester and I'm probably going to stop around then. As for the baby (my 4 year old), she's perfect and very well adjusted. :) She weighted 8 lbs at birth and was a perfect baby. Everything went well during the pg and has been fine ever since. But if you're concerned at all, you need to talk to your dr. He knows best. Good luck!

I took Prozac for the first 3 months of my pregnancy(consulting my doctor first though).I seemed to manage for the next 6 months but went back on them when my baby was born. My baby was born healthy but I recommend you see your doctor if you're unsure.I also worried but after heaps of different advice and info I was able to make up my mind.I breastfeed my little one and I also had to find out if Prozac was safe when breastfeeding. It turns out it is only if your taking a small dose(like 20mg).Other than that I have had no problems :)

My friend and I are both pregnant and taking antidepressants. Sorry, no news on the baby since we are still pregnant. I have had two other kids and decided not to take them, but this time my emotions have been really bad. I wighed the good against the bad. My doc said she has given them to tons of ladies and the babies are fine.

When I was pregnant, the only anti-depressant that was safe during pregnancy was prozac. I took that and I also took xanax, but that drug is a little more risky. I had my son in January of this year and he is just fine. I took mine the whole pregnancy, but every doctor and every situation is different.

I took Welbutrin for a little while when I was pregnant with my daughter. To be honost I didn't think it helped so I had to stop taking them. I also know people that had Bi-Polar disorder and had to take medicine throughout and the babies were fine. Every case is different though

I would strongly suggest that you speak with your doctor about this... antianxiety medications, such as Xanax, have been shown to cause birth defects in babies.

If you are currently taking such medications, please talk to your doctor. He or she will be better to advise you than any of us here at Yahoo!
