draino...or use a drain snake.

Does the water drain out after awhile?
If it is a double sink & you use a plunger you must stop up the other side when you plunge.

Dose sink drain slow & the plunging didn't work?
When the sink has emptied pour drain cleaner in untill drain fills.

You want to pour in enough to reach the stoppage.
It could take a good 1/2 gallon. You have to push the water out of the trap & have enough cleaner to get in to the down pipe where it will sink though the water because it is heavier than water to reach the stoppage. as the level goes down add more cleaner untill you have used the 1/2 gallon.

Let it set for at least 30 minutes. Run hot water slowly in to the drain, if water dosn't back up run water faster.

Some times the stoppage will just slide down and plug at a lower
level. If there are sinks at a lower level you might want to check that the pipe isn't blocked now.

If the sink don't drain at all, you can try to snake the drain.
All hardware stores have them. You want to get one that is long enough to reach the basement floor, or just past any sink that is beneath. (At least 15' for a kitchen)

Some times there is a opening in the sink drain that you can fit the snake through. Crank the snake into the drain. try to visulise
where the end of the snake is. (Look at the pipes under the sink for an idea of how far it is to the trap, through the trap & up to the wall) When it gets to where it is in the wall you hope that it will go down.

When you go through the sink drain at the top. you can run water if it is draining. This will help move the stoppage through the pipes. If the water is going down good check any sink that is on the same pipes below to see that the stoppage has moved past it.

If that didn't work (If you couldn't get the snake in to the drain inside the sink or the snake went up the pipe instead of down or there is just to much gunk in the drain) You will have to get the water out of the sink.

Go under the sink & look for nut that is screwed into the pipe.
If there is one (You will need a large pair of channel lock pliers or a pipe wrench) If there is no plug take the trap off. (You will have to catch some water.) Work the snake through the pipe.
Check the steps from above. Use the the full length of the snake.
Put it back together (Teflon tape on the knock out plug) & run the water.

Hey I have done that & still it has been plugged.

But I have cleaned 100's of drains & I have covered most of the things to look for.

I agree with Billy T. above.

If it is a really, really bad clog ie: no draining whatsoever, you need to remove the elbow under the sink. This is not advised to do-yourself if you have already put Draino or other strong stuff in the drain. Or if you are going to - anyways - use heavy-duty rubber gloves and wear glasses. Those products could burn you when you loosen the elbow and the stuff comes out.

I had to do this same thing a few years back, and it was full of hair, as my daughter and I had been washing our hair in the kitchen sink (due to bathroom renovations & not able to use shower).

If the elbow is hard to turn, get a "pipe wrench" from your hardware store &/or ask for an appropriate-sized wrench for the job from the salesperson at the store.

More than likely it's a grease clog. All of the above ways to unstop.
Once you get it clear: To keep it clear, squirt some dawn in the drain and run really hot water to flush any grease. Also if you are not on a septic tank, flush your coffee grounds through the drain. The acid in the grounds eats the grease. My grandma told me this 25 yrs ago. I've been doing it ever since and haven't had a clogged drain since.

I use Liquid Plumber. If you don't have it, you can dump a box of baking soda and a half bottle of vinegar, wait 20 minutes and run the hot water for a few minutes. I had a clog the other day, but it was a sponge in the waste disposal. Good luck!

this sounds like a big job but it isnt. take the pipe that looks like a elbo off and clean it. put it back on with a wrench. this just needs to be tight and not overtightened. have your husband or boyfriend do it. no need for drain cleaners or a plumber

what component of the home is next in line on that comparable drain pipe? At 25 ft away out of your kitchen, it would desire to be something, not related to you in any respect. it would desire to be tree roots. We had a basement rest room that one and all at as quickly as stopped flushing and whilst my father bumped off the rest room to be certain what became incorrect, the tree roots have been poking on the wax seal. No wood in outdoor which could have been closest so we in no way quite understand the place they got here from yet older residences have ceramic drain pipes under floor and roots can grab real directly to the little bumps and tough spots and dig real in and reason a heck of a large number. you may would desire to get somebody with an prolonged snake to bypass into the main efficient drain or the homestead with a minimum of one hundred ft or extra. only examine your extra archives. i might persist with the pipe that leads from the sink to the place ever it is going and function somebody else be upstairs and function them pour water and notice in case you will pay attention it run and doubtless locate the place you end listening to it. it is assuming it drains slowly and you ahve left it for an afternoon or with the objective to empty thoroughly so as which you will pay attention water working. we live in a fixer top besides and that they are often a venture! stable luck

Draino

Good old fashioned plunger and some muscle. A spinkle of Draino can't hurt either, once you get it going.
