Hi. A magnet works because many of the atoms have a magnetic field which is lined up one to the other. The more line up, the stronger the magnet. Not quite this simple but this is the idea.

Best way to tell the strength of a Magnet is with a Gauss meter, and measure the Oe Field.

magnets can usually pick things up, off the ground, so the farther it can lift something up the stronger it is. ?
