I was reading Ann Rice books when I was in middle school. Don't limit yourself to something in your "age range". Go for the good stuff.

Companions Of the Night by: Vivian Vande Veldeis my favourite book. I love it. It has mushy-teenage-lovey-duvey-stuff, but it is really good. It's about a teenager helping a Vampire getting away from these Vampire-hunters. You should really read it. I'm serious.

The Cirque du Freak series, by Darren Shan, is a good one. It's very popular, cool covers, and there are about 11 books in the series now.

don't know about novels, but the 1980s movie "The Lost Boys" is a really cool interpretation of vampires. very little voilence, almost no blood, and not that scary. but really good, it has corey haim in it.
