when they are asked serious moral and ethical questions, or even worse, when they see OTHER people who try to help others with their problems. It's like there is an entire generation of kids who just say "f*ck it" to any problem other people have. I was raised back in the 1950's and 60's, and NOBODY ever said that back then. Why do these new young adults have so little feeling or understanding or COMPASSION for others? Our country, America, did NOT become the great country it is by everyone just saying f*** it. Don't they "get it" that compassion is an admirable quality? What's going on with these people anyway?(and this is NOT a question about religion, so spare me those "religous" based answers please).

I think we were all taught to respect each other's opinions and that everyone is right in their own way. From this it became difficult to condemn anyone for anything, so people stopped having to be responsible for their actions. There was always some underlying reason that made them act that way, and it was never just that the person was being stupid. This spawned an entire generation of apathetic lazy people who really don't care about anything because it really doesn't matter. I find it interesting that they care enough to tell us that they don't care. At least there's that, lol. I'm 25 and find myself easily frustrated with this phenomenon (or whatever the word is- who really cares, anyway). ;)

first off i really don't believe it is a generational thing, my guy does the same thing and he is of the same generation, i believe it is a emotional defense to the problems of his childhood, and the gossiping prying people we all come in contact with in everyday life. although his morals are very good he decides who needs to know what about him and us, there is a line that most people don't see as a don't cross point. when that is not respected that attitude is the only defense.compassion is a wonder full thing except when the compassion is taken for granted, and used as an excuse to f k over the person who has it.which is the general responce to a compassionate act in this world.ever stop to help at a road side accident and get sued because u did, it happens all the time. so much for compassion.

Each generation over time for 1000's of years has been a better generation than the one prior to it.

But I agree....this last generation missed a step or a whole day of class or something. I have 2 half brothers 18-20 and both don't even have half the smarts that I did at that age.

Kids today think they just have to do nothing to get everything....they will wake up sooner or later in life when they realize they have nothing and everyone else has everything.

Well, I guess we have to teach our children better by doing a lot of work on what being respectful means. In my opinion, those young adults have none or little ideas of what respect means. It is the upbringing of each of them what makes them behave the way they do.

And then, add up that they listen to that on tv, in many movies they see without parental supervision and as a very young age. Honestly, maybe they say that and "they don't care" because that is what they see or saw at their home.

Luckily, not all of our young adults in America has been raised like that. So, there is hope!

Today's kids are spoiled beyond belief. Not only because of the great technological advances in the past 40 years or so but also because today's parents are clingly and endulgent.

A kid today is likely to have a cell phone by the time they are get to middle school. They interact with the world via a computer screen. They communicate via text messages. Their world is largely electronic and not only is it artificial but much of it is fake and sponsored. They are more likely to care about an advertising gimmick like "LonelyGirl15" on YouTube than a girl dying of cancer next door.

You have to realize, though, that this is just human nature. The kids are not born different today than they were in your childhood....it is just that the technology and the environment created by their parents is different and they adjust according to the selfish rules of human behavior.

I was born in the 70's my opinion is that parents stopped knowing how to teach real responsibility to their children
If a child id not taught to take responsibility for the things that go on around them then they won't they do not know that they should and a lot of times even though they may feel like they should do something or may know what is happening around them is wrong they do not know what to do so they say f--k it
a person must be taught these things from the beginning of there life and the parents must be an example

I blame the bombardment of media, new social pressures, and text messaging. (seriously!)

Today's youth are exposed to so much more advertising, rhetoric, violence, and splashy, sensationalized imagery I think it's caused them to get jaded and bored sooner than your generation or mine. I also think advertisers have put a major marketing blitz to make young adults feel inadequate and inferior, from their looks to their body shape to their overall personality.....so there's a lot less confidence and self-acceptance.

Re: text messaging....so much responses and emails I see in online forums like this are essentially poorly-spelled and abrupt....things like, "u r gay", "i m 4 u", "LMAO" really keep people from elaborating fully on their feelings and opinions. I'd much rather review some well written, articulate argument that was a world apart than mine than some 3-5 character blurb that has little context.

All those factors I think have made today's generation curt, aloof, and inarticulate. NOT to say that there aren't exceptions. Just my impression........

When I was growing up, in 6 grade, our class room did not have AC, we used old books and teacher did not care. Just on the other side of the hightway was a new prison with AC, new Basketball course and cable tv and I bet the food was better too.

No attention to the good kid and yell and scream at the bad kid. Hey bad attention is more attention then the good kid is getting.

Why should kids today give a damn? The people of YOUR generation, who are raising the kids of today, are partly responsible for all of this. Whatever a kid wants today, they're probably going to get. You cannot discipline your kids anymore, nor do anything that will teach them what happens when they screw up. Kids today are weak minded and a drag on civilization as a whole. But it's not their fault, people say.. It's the world we live in that makes them act like that, the world that YOUR generation created.
