We recently got back from Thailand where we bought a wooden wall ornament, it was wrapped in plastic bubble for one month and now that we have it home and have un wrapped it, it has a mold on the front and back. How can we restore it and get the mold off so that we can hang it inside??

The wood is stained dark, will clorox bleach or vinegar ruin the stain?

i build furniture using old wood off of barns and dilapidated old structures, most of the time there is mold on the wood i use. what i do is spray bleach water on the wood and let it dry out. the bleach kills the mold. once the bleach drys it shouldn't smell but if you are worried about the smell just rub some kind of grease-less water soluble perfume on the wood.

Mold generally requires 2 things to grow. A food source and moisture. When you remove the two the mold will stop growing.
You might try just airing it out to let it dry then wipe off the visible mould. Try keeping it in direct sunlight for a couple of days the UV light kills mold. Also there are some different types of remedies available at hardware/paint stores.

Just clean it with any soapy water really well. if need be clean it again let it dry and enjoy. The key is to remove the mold and worrie so much about kill the mold. Make sure to clean it outside, you do not want the mold to get into you home.
Don't use bleech on the wood.

Someone needs to see it. Take it to a good hardware store and ask for suggestions. You might need to stain it again but small containers of that can be found at the hardware store too. Then decide.

vinegar best cleaner that doesn't damage. it cleans almost anything. you might have to take a cotton ball soaked in vinegar and allow it to remain in one place a few seconds to be able to see an effect. the smell is horrible but the effectiveness is wonderful.
