for the same reason that the majority of the people who fought for the south in the civil war didnt own slaves at all: hope. the poor always believe that they can get a slice of what the upper 1% have, and they want to be remembered when the government comes knocking for taxes.

Two possible reasons.
One, the voting in red states isn't driven by economic issues, but rather by defense and social issues. It's entirely rational for a fiercely jingoistic, strongly religious man to vote for the Republicans, even if he stands to lose in the pocketbook because of it. He's not voting FOR capitalism, he's voting AGAINST abortion or civil rights for terrorists.
Two, a person can believe in a philosophy without directly benefitting from it. I support a free-market system, but I would make a terrible entreprenuer and I don't have much business sense. I support it because I think it's right, not because I stand to gain.
I could just as easily ask why the comparitively wealthier Northeastern voters tend to favor Democrats. Why would a high-income professional want to vote for someone who raises their taxes?

Those politically retarded people that Distr speaks of, are mostly people that believe in making their own way, working for a living, standing on their own two feet. They believe in a God, help their neighbors. They don't want handouts, don't respect lazy people, and believe that their are things in this world worth fighting for, namely their country and their friends. Including your right to sit around a classroom and speak of things you know nothing about. If it wasn't for those stupid people their would not be a USA. As for tax breaks I got a pretty good one. I'm not even close to rich. I don't expect someone who made alot of money to pay my way I'll do that. I have lived in both the city and the rural areas. I left a good paying job in the city for a job in public safety in a rural area. Less than half the pay. Best thing I ever did. My neighbors are great, I know the people that live around me. If my car breaks down someone will stop and help me every time. As for the city, most rural people love them. They think of them as a great place to visit. Like a Zoo.

Because they put more stock in fluff issues than in reality...In reality they are politically retarded...just point them toward a Flag and a gw bush photo and watch the demented gleam in their eyes ...this is why I hate the Republicans so much...for what they have done to my fellow Americans.
