The best kind is any kind handy. I don't think beggars can be choosers in this kind of a situation. Dry Chemical, Halogenated Agent, Water, CO2, fire blanket... whatever you had. Just get the fire out, the person may only have seconds without it.

Given a choice, I'd go for the fire blanket.

If using an extinguihser, try to not shoot the person in the face with it.

CO2 or fireblanket. Water would work to if you had a water cannon extingushiur, misconception that water wont put out fuel fires...its just not used in pools or puddles of it because it moves it around and makes it worse. On a fuel soaked person though itll work. Best bet is fire blanket and rolling w/ a co2 if you got it. Even better is getting into a large body of water if possible to help stop the burning

Since petrochemicals are class "B" fires, an extinguisher capable of extinguishing this type works best, specifically a CO2 or dry chemical extinguisher (look for either a BC or ABC type).

Actually, water can put out a gas fire, but it takes a LOT of water. In ordinary situations, you won't have enough water to do the job.

I was in Crash Rescue at Ft. Lewis, WA during the Viet Nam war, while the Real Men got their butts shot off in VN, and we trained by pouring barrels of jet fuel on a small pond of water and setting it on fire, then going in and retrieving a small keg to simulate a human. Funn!!!!

You need to have the person get on the ground and roll them around until it's put out. (stop, drop, and roll method). That may be the quickest way if you dont have an extinguisher around.

Carbon dioxide or dry chemical, as water won't work with that kind of fire.
