Look to make sure that your laptop has a wireless built in - 802.11a, 802.11b or 802.11g. Then you can proceed to create an "adhoc network" for instruction on how to do this on a mac - see here: http://blog.crispierry.com/2006/08/how_to_create_a.html

for windows - see here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/bowman_02april08.mspx

Wireless LAN works to extend the reach of existing wired networks through radio waves to entire organization settings. Also known as Wi-Fi, IEEE 802.11 is the set of standards for Wireless Local Area Networks
if u want to transfer files between 2 or more laptops without wire make sure u will need a wireless router to connect it, but they only cost around 50 $ or less
1 Wireless Network Interface Card ( NIC ) installed for each computer that needs wireless access.
2 Access Point to connect all of the wireless computers. *
3 A computer that has an NIC to connect to the access point via Ethernet cable. This computer is needed to configure your access point
4 Computers running Windows 98, ME, 2000, or XP. (Earlier versions of Windows and other operating systems will not be covered)

Network Setup Steps

Plug in your access point.
Connect the Ethernet cable from your computer NIC that you will use to configure the access point to one of the LAN ports on the access point. These should be clearly labeled.
You will need to login to your access point. Look in your instruction manual for the address of your access point. All access points have a default IP address that the factory sets. It should be something like 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.10, etc.
For step-by-step instructions on how to login to your access point, click here.
To download a movie showing how to login to your access point right click here and choose Save Target As... or Save Link to Disk.
A configuration page should load into your browser with many different options depending on your brand. If the configuration page loaded, then your access point is up and running.
Install a wireless NIC into each computer you want to hook up to your wireless network. The instructions for installing your NIC should have been packaged with your card. If you are installing a PCI wireless NIC, look at my instructions for installing a NIC here. It is essentially the same process.
After installing your wireless NIC it may ask you for some information. It may want to know if you want to run in ad-hoc mode or infrastructure mode. Choose infrastructure mode. If it asks you to what SSID, tell it "ANY". This tells the NIC to search for access points that are broadcasting SSIDs. Your access point probably will be broadcasting this by default.
To check your connection to the access point:
Hold down the Windows key (This is the key that looks like the Windows graphic) and press R. A run dialog box should pop up. If you are using Win98/ME, type in the box "command" and press enter. If you are using Win2000/XP type in the box "cmd". This will pop up a command window.
At the command prompt type "ping X.X.X.X" where X.X.X.X is your access point's IP address. It should come back with replies from your access point. If it does you are connected to your access point. If not you will need to go back over your steps to see where you went wrong and try this step again.
After this configuration is complete your wireless NIC should be connected to your access point and you have a fully functioning wireless network

Okay. Not much help from me; I think you might want to try convincing them to use bluetooth or infared
Unless you have a pc floating around?
As far as I know you need a pc to have a wireless network.
