If you have natural gas going to the studio you can get some really nice units. Some are enclosed. Some are built to look like a fireplace so if you want a little ambiance they would be worth a look. Plus I think they still are less expensive to operate than electric. I have a gas "fireplace look alike" unit in my great room and it keeps the room very comfortable without having to heat the entire house.

It's kind of a person preference issue. The oil filled electric heaters are nice, and silent but take awhile to heat up. The small ceramic cube heaters work very well and are pretty quick, but you hear the fan. Also keep anything flammable away from the front of a cube heater.
Kerosene heaters are by far the fastest, but require ventilation and are dangerous if you do not know how to properly operate and maintain them. A kerosene heater would also probably be a bit much for a studio apartment. I wouldn't recommend one.
It would probably be a good idea to light an incense stick and move it slowly around the edges of your windows and doors to check for air leaks. The clear plastic window insulation kits which come with two sided tape and sheet plastic which you then shrink with a hair dryer help a lot if you don't have a *&^%#@ cat. You can get cheap self-adhesive foam weather stripping for around the door if it leaks air and roll up an old towel and put at the base of the door if there are any air leaks there.
You can get all of that at Wal-mart, plus big thick socks and hot cocoa mix with marshmallows.

Is your electricity metered? If yes, then get an oil-filled radiator type. A little more expensive, but will stay warm after you turn it off.
If no meter (your landlord pays the electric) just get a space heater. Be sure it is grounded, and reliable.
Avoid those kerosene heaters - my parents made themselves sick using one indoors.
Happy studio life!
