I have noticed a bit of rust beginning underneath the rear hatch at the bottom - the car is not that old and i keep it clean. anyone else had a similar problem?

No, I haven't noticed any rust, but when I went to get the jack out of the back of the trunk where it was nestled in it's little cubby hole, the cubby hole was full of water. I would like to know how that got in there. Never would have known it if I hadn't attempted to use the jack, which I couldn't get out. But I just bought the car so I don't know if there might be a logical explanation for this.

Sounds like the drain holes in the hatch are plugged and water is being retained inside the actual hatch.

Open your hatch and look for small holes and ensure they are clean. Use an air hose if you have to.

If this is not the problem then maybe the hatch is out of alignment and it is rubbing on other parts of the body. Causing the paint and primer to be removed in turn exposing the bare metal to the elements. Which in turn creates rust.

Or last....could be a replaced hatch or a repaint of that section if you bought it used. Body shop might not have done a proper repair of the area which will cause rust to start.

I DO NOT BUT YOU NEED TO GO TO THE DEALER LET THEM LOOK AT IT CAUSE IF YOU CAN GET IT FIXXED FOR FREE ID START WITH THEM.
