Our town's schizophrenic walks around all day talking to himself and sometimes he acts impulsively. What we, the townspeople, often do is try to come off as friendly to him. We wave, toot our horn from our cars, and chat briefly with him. I don't know what the people in your community have tried, but maybe they should try to be understanding of him. He probably has no clue the damage he has caused by threatening your entire neighborhood! If kindness fails, then you should just continue your pursuit to have him put into a mental institution.

There is not a thing you can do until he breaks the law and then you can insist that he be arrested by filing a complaint against him.
Until he hurts himself you can not expect the mental health officials to get involved. Now if he hurts someone else then maybe.
Every community has one or two of these people and its a tight line with te law when it comes to protecting their rights as well as yours.
You can partition for a court ordered restraining order if he has threatened you or harassed you and then if that's issued he can not be within x amount of feet of you without risking going to jail.
Can you call your county social workers office and see if there is anyway that they can make a visit to his home and then from there maybe he can get some help with his medication and taking it properly.
I understand that it can be frightening not knowing what hes going to do next.
There are advocates for the mentaly ill-try helping his also.

Obviously, the laws governing these matters are slightly different from state to state, but it seems like contacting Adult Protective Services might be the place to start. It sounds like this guy could be a danger to himself as well as others. APS hopefully will see that. If the police have responded to any of the incidents you have described, it may not be a bad idea to pull a FOIA (freedom of information act) on him. With that info on hand it might be easier to get APS interested in taking the case. It's important that on the FOIA request you be very broad about the information you are seeking. (ex: Any and all calls, incidents, reports, and or officer notes pertaining to Mr. Schizo at 1234 Crazy St. Anytown USA) Good luck - hopefully your state has adopted the Castle Law!!!

I once had an "incident" where I got in a fight with my neighbor, because I was sure she was watching me. I thought she was harassing me and video-taping me ... but now I'm fairly sure that I was the crazy one. I apologized to her afterwards. I didn't want her to be mad at me... I have no idea what she or my neighbors must think of me. I don't know if they know how paranoid I was (most likely). I didn't explain anything because I didn't want my neighbors to think I was crazy or scary, so I just kind of avoided them. I wouldn't hurt anyone; I just thought my neighbor was trying to hurt me. Maybe your neighbor also regrets the fight with your neighbor; he might even be embarressed by it. Has he gotten in a fight since? Also, did his fight with the whole neighborhood start before or after you petitioned to get him out. Such an action might make anyone (with or without mental illness) angry enough to say things they don't mean. Maybe you could try apologizing for the petition and just being friendly with him since you all have to live together anyway. It might make him question his paranoia. When I met my neighbor, it made me question my hallucinations as I realized she was so different (much nicer) than what I had been hearing.

Once he assulted a neighbour..

If anyone starts assulting others you call the cops but when you come to the weakest among weak-the schizz'-then its petition time!! sic!
Talk to him and be frindly.

Instead of a petition, issue a restraining order against him if you're worried. Otherwise, avoid the individual. If you're certain he isn't taking his meds regularly, you can try to get a court order to make him, but that is difficult for a stranger to do. If he's already assaulted someone, it might be easier to get to court. Be careful, but mindful of the persons feelings. Remember, it's not his fault.

Move to another neighbourhood or put up with him until he is put away from the authorities. I know how you feel, we have been going through something similar!

i had a g/f that had been diagnosed as shizopherenic after we had browken up. She later murdered someone then killed herself. Take them very serious - but there is very little you can do until he breaks a law
