Close all programs. Shut computer off. Turn the computer back on. That is "re-booting,"

T the practical problem with your webcam.

}The camera needs its driver to be recognize by the computer. Sometimes it uses a CD that comes with the camera, sometimes you read a note that says it will be recognized instantantly by XP or so.

I work in an AMD X64 with windows XP X64... that usually does not recognizes 90% of the webcams becpuse drivers are not being provided by manufacturers for a Windows that even has not being launched commercially.. thats the price I pay for experimenting anbd testing this OS.

If this is not your case, and you are running a commercial OS, the usual procedure is to first install the software from the CDROM or disk supplied by the manufacturer, then REBOOT, and connect the camera... it will take some seconds, but after some little time you will notice a messagge that saysNEW HARDWARE FOUND... and then HARDWARE IS READY.

If this does not happens, you need to go to the Control Panel, and select New hardware, and try to install from there.

Your last resorts are:

1- Go to Control Panel and check HARDWARE, then choose the system TAB, and then DEVICE MANAGER, in wich you search for the device you are connecting.. if in any of the devices and controllers you see a yellow !... then the driver was installed but your machine does not recognize the driver version.

2- Check the manufacturer{ s site, and visit its FAQ page and Drivers/support. Get the lattest driver and install it, if problem persists, just write to the manufacturer{ s technical support stating the problem and providing the info regarding your equipment and softare versions...

The only extra thing to do is get a refund or exchange for another from other company.

-------------The theory behing rebbot and switching your PC:

There are 5 levels of having your computer obeying you, from the more subtle to the harsh one... they are:

Close application by just pressing the X on the right corner or by means of a dialogue

Close application by CTROL DELETE. Closes one unresponding program from a list, so the computer keeps working

SLEEP or SUSPEND MODE. Wich isi a switch or command to have the computer turned off, but be able to return to the point where you were working.

REBOOT, wich you usually use when the computer gets frozen and does not allow keyboard input, or when you suspect virus or someone logged into your machine w/o permission. There is a small switch for this. Or a software panic botton. In this case, the computer goes off for a second and restarts automatically, and all unsaved work is lost.

SOFT SWITCH OFF, this is a measure you take when you want the power supply to stop in such a manner that no data is kept on RAM. This is aplied by means of requiring the computer to turn off from a menu or dialogue, or pressing the ON switch for some seconds.

HARD SWITCH OFF: When your computer does nothing and accepts nothing, in the back of the computer, by the power supply, is common to find an interruptor that really cuts energy off. This switch is there to make sure no elelctrical flux goes into the computer from the 110V outlet.

You reboot when the soft gets into trouble, or the system software goes bananas.

It would be nice to know what kind of webcam your trying to install.

It always best to get the latest driver from the webcam website instead of using the disc that came with the webcam.
