You are smart so let me advise you a little.. Have owned 5 homes in my life. Read on...
If you have 20K in cash and no bills. You need to forget about an appartment buy a home. You can take about 10 grand find you a new home just built in a sub some where. You will need to look for a good morage co that will work it out for you to give 5% down. My down and closing cost me just over $8000 on $121,000 and my payments are just under 800 a month with taxes and insurance included. Then you spend 2000 on the things you need for you home and you still have 8000 to live on for about 6 months. As you said you will have a job way before then.
After 5 years when the housing prices go back up (normally a 7 year cycle) sell the house for more then what you paid for it and buy a new one and end up with extra money again.
Think about things before you move when you have that much money.

I am sorry to hear about your mom. When you look for apartments you need to find out about the utilities. What is included as far as water, gas, cable, phone and electric. Keep in mind that you will be paying for these things as well as paying to do your laundry. So those things along with your cell phone, cost of food for yourself and your 'kids', gas, insurance and maintenance for your car. Then you also have all your everyday things like: shampoo/conditioner, soap, toothpaste, paper products, laundry soap, and so on. So before you get your apartment make sure you have money set aside to take care of all the things that you use daily. It's expensive setting up house when you first go out on your own. But then it'll settle down a bit financially. Just be prepared for unexpected expenses too by setting up a savings account to cover them.

First off don't get credit cards and go into debt by using them and thinking you will pay them back on the next statement. Its too easy to go into debt. I think I would find a cheaper apt. And you might think about giving up on having pets for awhile there costly and need attention. Which if your working a steady job you will not have time for taking good care of them. Just a suggestion think about it. You will have to pay for medical and Rx's. Dentist's etc. And make sure you have locks on doors, windows to keep you safe. And buy a fire extinguisher.
And as far as the money you receive, think savings account. Don't blow all you money on things you can live without for now.Best of luck to you on this your first journey into the picture of the thing we call LIFE.

Sorry about your Mom, that's rough.
Figure $800 plus utilities for your apartment, factor in any health care needs (no job, no health care coverage?), pet care (possible/probable vet bills, with 3 animals), any social life expenses, clothing, household needs (laundry/cleaning/furnishings). You can probably get by on around $1400-$1600 a month if you're careful, depending on cost of living where you live.

you'll have your apartment then your utilities (water, gas, electric, sewage, trash) -> unless these are included in your rent
then you also need to think about getting some sort of renter's insurance so if something were to happen you wouldn't be stuck having to repay for all of your possessions out of pocket
it's also a wise idea to have a little nest egg put aside for emergencies because things break, or you could get sick, or your car could break down or an animal could get sick and you may find yourself needing some quick cash

Stick to your budget. Keep extra money/save for emergencies. Plan for the unexpected: car breaking down, refrigerator breaking, etc.

Keep the cost of utilities in mind, health & renters insurance also is important. Put money away too in case of emergencies.

First of all I just wanted to say sorry to hear about your mother. I'm taking care of my mom so you remind me of myself a little bit. My guess is that you can expect the basics....like electric, cable or satalite, all the ones you mentioned, and any other bills that come to mind. It just depends on your life style. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. :-)
