I have tried to start this 4.3L 6 cylinder engine and it cranks, but does not start. Occasionally it will fire, but still it will not start up. Could old oil be the problem, I emptied the gas and put new gas in, but it won't start. And I also cleaned out the carbeurator. And what is a needle valve? Any help will be appreciated.

A needle valve is part of the carb. More than likely though it's going to be the way the carb is set with the fuel mix(screws on the side)
Try going to the library 2 chk out a haynes repair manuel for that year car.

I am wondering how many miles this engine has on it. Was it running when you last shut it off?? If it was there is a very good possibility that the timing chain has jumped, especially if it is high mileage, (135 to 175k). Fuel could be the problem, but you do not give enough info for that evaluation. One of the other readers suggested you spray some carb cleaner into the throat of the carburetor with the air cleaner off and try to start. If it does start then the timing chain is out and you have got a fuel problem. Also make sure you have fuel from the fuel pump by disconnecting the fuel line from the carburetor and cranking the engine. If you have fuel flow then it is in the carb. Could be the fuel float or the needle and seat are stuck. You would be advised at this point to go ahead and rebuild the carb.

If it is firing but not starting, it could be the carb is gunked up and will need a bit of rebuild.
What you can try: remove the air filter, and spray a bit of carb cleaner into the opening. Get back in the drivers seat and turn it over, it should crank over and then sputter and die out.

open the butterfly valve stick a screwdriver in it to hold it open. take the airfilter off. The butterfly valve is the thing that opens and closes when the engine is running. Anyway stick the screwdriver to hold it open. Then try to start it. if it starts you should take the screwdriver out. Sometimes that thing sticks a bit. If it starts you know it's the carburator so rebuild it and change the airfilter. Like levi68 said.

You'll most likely have a problem with the starter or fuel line...and the needle valve helps regulate the flow of gas in your system.

sounds like your flux capacitor went out, you can pick one up from the parts store for about 8 bucks, but they are behind the counter
