1988 Chevy Cavalier 2.8. was told the fuel pump was IN the gas tank. Now someone says it is on top. dropped the tank, seen a "cap" like thing with 3 metal lines (all shot by the way) and one electrical. is that the fuel pump? I have checked online (autozone) and no photos. Problem: in short, the car would crank, no start. pour gas in carb, would run til gas ran out. had a 1/2 tank until i cranked it, then dropped to nothing. So back to question; or do i need to replace the whole gas tank? thanks so much.

The fuel pump and gas tank sending unit are a module that fits through that hole in the top of tank. You need to remove the lock ring around those lines and electrical connector. Tap it counter-clockwise and it will unscrew. Then pull the pump/module assembly out of the tank.

Make sure to disconnect the battery and be very careful. Even if the tank is empty, it is still very dangerous. Gas impregnates the tank material, and will explode if a flame or spark contacts the gas vapor.

Electric fuel pump failure is sort of rare, check electrical system and ECU first. The late '80s Chevys were infamous for doing this kind of thing- Dying and giving symptoms of fuel pump failure, when its actually the fuel injection. If this car has a carburetor, the fuel pump is on the side of the engine block. If its a fuel-injected engine, the pump is in the tank. You can check fuel-rail pressure on the FI engine to diagnoise a bad fuel pump before dropping tank.

Fuel pump is in the tank. You should make sure the fuel pump relay is not the problem or simply a fuse before you spend all the money and go to the trouble of changing the pump. The fact that it runs when you put gas in the "throttle body" does mean that is is a fuel delivery problem so you are on the right track. The pump is not all that is involved though so a thourough check could save you money and headache.

the cap like thing with the metal lines is the sending unit. If they are rusty and leaking, you need to replace the sending unit. Before you replace the fuel pump though you need to make sure you don't have a blown fuse or a broken wire, and that there is power going to the pump. If you have power going to the pump and it's not pumping, then yeah you need to replace the pump. On this car you should be able to buy just the sending unit, just the pump or the two of them together.

yep, replace that pump, it's the module with the cap thingy and the 3 lines running out, it's pricy, but likely what you need to get the car runnin again. and in the future keep a third or more of a tank of gas in the vehicle at all times to cool the fuel pump. frequent runnin low on gas burns up fuel pumps. best wishes and best of luck with your project.

it's on top of the fuel tank, some cars you can get to it by removing the lower back seat, otherwise the tank needs to be removed to get to the pump
