Good question.. I'd like to know that myself.

I'm American, and i absolutely LOVE footie! (< Thing is...America HAS its sport fav, and thats baseball. Baseball has been around for far too long, but i dont see it fading anytime soon. I really think Football, is gonna take over its spot, as fav though. Either way, soccer (footie) is still fairly new to people here. They just dont have room, sort of speak, for another sport. We have loads and were happy with that.
If they gave it have a chance, in which it is getting more notice than usual lately... people here would enjoy it more. It's an awesome sport, and it isnt as easy as what people think it is. It takes a very strong mind and body to play this sport. And i dont think, people realize that. They had rather make fun of it. They'll learn one day..LOL. When their kid comes from out of the blue and says "mom..dad, i wanta play soccer"! They'll be shocked, but agree.. then they'll be hooked for life! It's awesome!

This is a question that comes up every World Cup year on American sports tv programs and in magazines. There are several theories.

1. By the time modern soccer clubs were forming in America, we already had a national sport, baseball.

2. Americans are often resistant to adopting trends from the outside world. We still use the imperial measuring system, avoid social democracy, and tend to export culture much more than we import it. In my opinion, I think some of the resistance to soccer comes from the fact that it IS so popular in the rest of the world. Americans want to feel like innovators and individualists, not johnny-come-lately's to a pre-existing trend.

3. Soccer emphasizes teamwork, finesse, speed, and often ends in a draw between teams. Most popular American sports emphasize individual achievement, dramatic physical feats, size, strength, and clear victory. I'm not sure why we prefer games like that. Some people claim it's because Americans are much more competitive and individualistic than other nations.

One reason - its boring!

Yes I know that baseball is boring too and millions of people love baseball, but baseball is Americana. Its part of our national heritage.

I went to Wembly stadium in London and there were 100,000 people there. The two teams, Manchester United and another from Liverpool were the greatest teams in the country. Everyone was excited. At the end of the game, the score was nil-nil (0-0). Soccer will never, I mean never be a top sport in the USA. I agree that the athletes are very talented, but the game is just boring. Yes, you're right, I don't know the game and I don't know all the strategy involved, but I don't want to know cause the game is boring.

Its just plain boring.

Just a heads up that there are 3 countries in North America. I know for a fact that Mexico is crazy for the sport and it's getting better in Canada. I live in a small part of Canada and I know people that walk around with footballs almost attatched to their feet. I have many cousins and friends in America and they play it all the time. Oh, and a note to everyone, please stop grouping all three countries into one group and calling us Americans. Thanx.

Because football (soccer) is poorly packaged, presented and perceived in the US, Canada - football has a third-world image problem - no way middle-class / rich America wants to be seen playing/watching a poor-man's game. Blame it on FIFA.... for the good of the game!!

We have lots of sports to entertain us. All the sports must compete for our attention. I prefer basketball, baseball and boxing; others prefer football, tennis and hockey. I know people that watch soccer.

it cannot be a popular sport because the goals are counted singly and not doubly like say basketball, and also americans dont know how to use their legs for anything thats why they have to import players to play at their world cups bla bla bla.
