You can get a demo version of winzip for free, or even better, use winrar. A torrent file is a data file used by a bit torrent application. Torrent files contain the data which tells the program the files, their sizes and hashes, as well as the tracker(s) and whether or not the torrent allows/disallows use of DHT. You need to run a bit torrent program like utorrent and then open the torrent file in the menu to start the download. Bit torrent is often slow at first so don't give up and cancel. Wait for 10-20 minutes and you should see your speed pick up by a great deal.

Go here to read more on what Bit Torrent is:

Have you tried Winzip? it's a free download. Try download.com
If it's not a .zip file, you should use Winrar. This is also a free program. When you extract a zip or other type of archive you should right click on the file, then choose to extract to... and it shows your current directory. That creates a new folder with all the unpacked files in it.
