Since the chemical damage is bodywide, I'll focus on the physical damage. Smoking coats the insides of your lungs with fine particles, which makes the muocus lining more viscous and harder to expel while simultaneously impeding the transfer of oxygen. It's like spray-painting your bronchial tubes. Anyway, your lungs try to expel the foreign matter, and all this work wears them out.

The irritants in the smoke cause inflammation in the alveoli or small sacs of the lungs. The body's efforts to clean up the damage actually destroy some of the thin delicate walls between the sacs, causing them to enlarge, which ultimately can lead to emphysema. The enzyme most closely linked with this damage is a tryptase.

There is an increased risk of lung cancer, statistically 0.9 percent of smokers will develop lung cancer.

The carbon monoxide smokers inhale accelerates atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries which supply the heart muscle itself with blood.

The trifecta of disease. Now don' it look just so COOL having an inch long ash on a cigarette hangin' outta your mouth while squinting to avoid the smoke? Pure glamour, the tobacco companies would have you believe.

Tar and all the other nasty chemicals sticking on the inner wall of the lung is pretty upsetting to the little fellows we call lung cells.
