The "Crusades" which were an attempt to recover the holy places of Jerusalem were eventually won by the Muslims, who overthrew the Christian kingdom of Jerusalem and restored Muslim rule. The term "Crusade", however, got popularized by its repeated use and displacement to apply first to any war undertaken to advance the Roman church's agenda -- there were even "Crusades" against other Christians, like the Cathars of southern France -- and then to any all-out effort which could be given some sort of moral coloring like the crusade against human slavery of the 18th - 19th Centuries and then to anything which anybody wanted to make people think was Really Important. There are intermittent "Campus Crusades for Christ" (i.e., Fundamentalist recruitment drives) and Leslie Charterist even reported a "Crusade for Better Auction Bridge" in England in the '30s. (He may have been joking.) The Muslims, naturally enough, considered the Crusades unprovoked aggression, which is why Bush's old reference to the War on Terror as a "Crusade" got such a bad reception.

Actually no one won the last crusades (holy wars), if you haven't noticed the 'crusades' are still here, only it called 'War on terror' now. These 'crusades' will only end when there is one universal religion...and seeing that will never happen, there will always be holy wars (crusades).

Easier to say who lost. The Byzantine Empire (who were Christian).
Early in the 13th. Century a massed Christian army turned up at Venice, asking to buy supplies as it was on its way to wage crusade against the Muslims who were occupying to Holy Land. Venice was near to panic as after all, this army could turn nasty if it wanted to. The Doge at the time, Enrico Dandolo, who was at least eighty years old and nearly blind, told his people not to panic. He told the merchants of Venice to give the army what it wanted and not to charge them. Next he invited the leaders of the crusade to a feast. After listening to talk he declared himself inspired to join, nay, lead them on their holy endeavour.
The target, as it turned out, was not to be Egypt, but Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. The Byzantine Empire was the great trading rival of Venice and, has it happened, it was Byzantine settlers that foundered Venice in the 9th. Century.
So, it came to pass that the Fourth and final (historic) crusade was waged on a Christian empire, by other Christian for the greater glory of trade and Venice. Constantinople was sacked in 1204.

Isn't history fun!
