Yep. I know plenty of 'em. Including me. It cracks me up that people are so curious about the sex part. Sex is the last thing on my mind. I am stressed about work, making sure I pay my bills, my car needs servicing; I need to go to the gym and be on a diet; I'm hoping I'm putting enough money away for my retirement; I worry about my mother as she gets older; I worry about being a good parent to my 3 children (yes, I had them naturally). So....you wanna tell me why people equate "gay" with "abnormal?"

Since this group is for Gay and Lesbian discussion, there are obviously gays and lesbians around.
There are no definitive studies on the total gay population. Many people prefer not to identify when polled; some do not classify themselves as gay even though they have sex with men (go figure!).
Various polls put the figure between 2 and 10 percent. Kinsey's famous poll used a self-selected sample, so that is not particularly accurate. The last US census showed 5% of households were same-sex, but that doesn't necessarily mean they were gay; and it doesn't cover gay men living with parents or relatives.
Even so, with a spread of 2 to 10%, I think 5% is a reasonable working number.
Given that the current population of the US is over 260 Million, that would make around 13 million gays and lesbians in the US alone.
Gay men and women are in every walk of life - bankers, secretaries, cooks, cleaners, business owners, sports stars, film stars, trash collectors. Almost certainly you have met gay men and lesbians as you go about your daily life. But we don't look any different to you, so you won't have known that.
True, a very small percentage live up to the highly effeminate gay man or extremely butch dyke stereotypes that are portrayed on TV; but that's just entertainment, not real life.

Yes, I do. I am gay and have been a committed relationship with my partner for 34 years. Between the two of us, I expect there is over 2,000 people both gay and straight that know us and care about us as we do them.
The way you defined your question is rather odd, why must you state that you are not gay when asking the question? What are you afraid of?

0.5%? More like 10%, my friend.
The funny thing is, most of us aren't gluttons for punishment, despite the impressions you might get from reading this section.
So a lot of us only 'out' ourselves to people we read as being supportive, when we are young and vulnerable. I found that before I came out, the more publicly supportive I was of my gay friends, and about gay rights, and the more tolerantly informed I showed myself to be, the more and more people started coming out to me.
Now I know probably 80-100 gays, lesbians and bifolk (and a handful of TG/TS folk), but only 8 years ago, NO ONE had yet felt safe enough to come out to me - even two rather obvious longterm childhood friends. I had to show that I was safe to come out to, first.
(No wonder gay bashers think there are far fewer of us....)

Estimates vary. I've heard between 4 and 12%. Most commonly cited is 10%. I've also heard that number is doubled on college campuses (don't know who you are or where you are; may or may not be relevant). Chances are though, whether or not they're OUT, you do know at least one gay person.

They say that one out of every ten guys is gay, They also say that one out of every five women are/have engaged in a homosexual act. I just recently found out that my Ex-Best friend is gay, He never made passes towards me and i would have never guessed it. My point is that alot of people are gay but are not open about it so you will never know the actual percentage of gay's in the community

Of course I know people who are gay. Everyone knows at least one person that is gay but they might not know that person is gay because they're not "out" about it.
I have several friends that are openly gay. I'm straight but I have no problem with hanging around gay friends. In fact, I love shopping with one of my male gay friends. I have lesbian friends and don't feel the least bit uncomfortable around them. They're not romantically interested in me because I'm straight and I'm not romantically attracted to them because I'm straight. That doesn't mean we can't be friends!

My best friend, he's gay. I've known him sense kindergarden...and i have several lesbian friends, and some bisexual friends. To tell you the honest truth, they're the best friends you can have. They understand you more than others do and keep secrets well. I dont know what i would do if their weren't any gay people in this world!!!! lol.
