They can be a joy and a handful. They will try your patience and make you laugh. They can be the most loving or the most distant children. They are brilliant in their own way and often seem to know more than you do about obscure things. Many have habits that are capable of making you nuts, but if you can find the strength to love them they will make your life an experience that is beyond the price of diamonds.

Gutstein described neuro-typical children as social scientist. They observe people coming together and interacting. they see things in their surroundings and gather as much information as they can. For them, success is reached when they see or experience something new.
Autistic Children on the other hand have too many sensory issues. Their world is full of chaos. They are at the same time overstimulated by somethings and under stimulated by others. Yet they still seek to learn about their environment. They do this in a very different way. For the autistic child, he must focus his attention on a single object or a very limited # of objects. He attempts to shut out other stimulus. This is not that different than what we do if we are trying to concentrate on something amid many distractions. The child seeks to gain control of his exposure to this stimulus. As a result he prefers to play with inanimate objects instead of people. For this child scientist, success is achieved when he can control an activity to the point of repeating the same thing over and over again.
They are not weird little children. They are responding quite normally to a very bizarre situation.
My son is 12. He was diagnosed 10 yrs ago. He is very high functioning. We are working on teaching him to read facial expressions in order to improve his social abilities. Check out RDI http://www.rdiconnect.com/

I know that I love one and although he can't say it with words yet I know he loves me. Everything else I know is secondary.
