Ok so when I have the problem
10+5z-10=4z+1
+-4z +-4z
10+1z-10=1
ok so now according to the additive inverse I should add a positive 10 to both sides since the 10 is negative which would give me
20+1z=1
which is the wrong answer. So can someone explain to me what I am exactly supposed to do when I get to that point?

the first ten is positive the second negative. So basically 10-10=0
1z=1

you have 10+1z-10 = 1
don't make this any harder than it has to be,
10-10+z = Z which = 1
what you are doing wrong is that you did not add ten to both sides
you should be getting
10+1z= 1 +10
since the ten is negative on the left side, you add ten to negative ten and then you also have a positive ten on the left side so you are just left with ten

(10+1z - 10)+10 = (1) +10
so 10+1z= 1 +10

Teachers spend SO much time forcing strict & specific rules down the throats of students they completely forget to actually TEACH the students anything!

Watch:

10 + 5z - 10 = 4z + 1

GROUP like terms

10 - 10 + 5z - 4z = 1

Now COMBINE

10 - 10 = 0
5z - 4z = z

==> z = 1

That's all there is to it.

This only really warrents a line answer, but here are a few irrelavent steps:

10+5z-10=4z+1
(10-10)+5z=4z+1
5z=4z+1
(5z-4z)=(4z-4z)+1
z=1

10+1z-10=1
10-10 is 0, so it's 1z=1
z-1

according to what ur sayin
10+1z-10=1
+10 +10
so u get 10+1z=11
which simplifies to be 1z=1 and z=1

10+5z-10=4z+1
then
5z-4z=1+10-10
z=1

I seriously hope you are below the age of 10. Otherwise you should probably consider banging your head on your desk a couple times.

(How do kids these days not know how to add and subtract?)
