I've had similar problems with towels and T-shirts. I also assume it has to do with the dye. I've isolated the following things which will cause it: Benzoyl peroxide (like acne cream) and certain deodorants. The acne cream will bleach the fabric immediately and even after you've had it on for several hours -- like if you wipe your face to remove sweat.

Yes it has happened to be. I have more of a problem reds. I have heard vinegar sets the dye, and I have heard salt sets the dye. I have had no success with either. So now if I have anything red I only wash it with other reds and with blacks. I do agree on the cause being poor dye and fabric quality. Cheap imports being the worse. You get what you pay for

I think that you are speaking about something other than just your good old basic "bleeding" of colors in the wash..? I have a huge problem with my clothes being ruined, especially colors like beige-ish or brownish, anything light lavender or light blue, and what happens is there are like ugly streaks in them, not from bleeding of other items in the wash, but it always a color that is similar in shade to the item ruined. Like for instance a pair of light brown/beign pants got these orangish-brown looking areas all over them. A light blue shirt got light whitish-blue spots on them. It drives me nuts. An olive green colored shirt got an ugly brownish fade around collar and at other spots.
I tried changing detergents but it did not help. The strangest part is that it doesn't seem to happen to anyone else's clothes in my family. ARGH! It sucks

I hate just giving web sites out, but they provide the best info. Yes I have had that happen in the past, but I always now wash like colors together. Darks are washed in cold. Any lighter colors that need to be washed in cold, shouldn't be put in with the darker colors. I have had problems with the color red the most. Pink is okay for my underwear, but I don't think my husband would appreciate it on his. Here's a web site that goes into all the questions you asked (and more!) Good luck!

Using vinegar in the water is supposed to help set dye.

use a cup of white vinegar in the wash. Also it could possibly be the detergent you are using!
