During ovulation is the best time, which is usually 12-14 days after the first day of her period (the first day she bleeds). Every woman is different though, but in my research i have found when there is a clear sticky discharge like egg white is the best time for the sperm to securely make it into the womb. If you're off by a few days (before ovulation) no worry because sperm can last up to 5-7 days inside.
There is also the chance of getting pregnant most any time of the month, it depends on how potent you are and how ready her body is.
Good luck and keep us posted!!!

Starting with the first day of her period as Day No. 1, days 1-9 are usually okay, and then days 19 through until her next period. Having said that, no date is 100% safe during her cycle. So protection should be used no matter where you are in the cycle if you want to prevent a pregnancy. The joke is "What do you call a woman who uses the rythm method of birth control? Mommy!"

The process of ovulation is controlled by the hypothalamus of the brain and through the release of hormones secreted in the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, (LH and FSH). In the follicular (pre-ovulatory) phase of the menstrual cycle, the ovarian follicle will undergo a series of transformations called cumulus expansion, this is stimulated by the secretion of FSH. After this is done, a hole called the stigma will form in the follicle, and the ovum will leave the follicle through this hole. This release of ovum, ovulation is triggered by a spike in the amount of FSH and LH released from the pituitary gland. During the luteal (post-ovulatory) phase, the ovum will travel through the fallopian tubes toward the uterus, implanting there 6-12 days later if fertilized, or degrading in the fallopian tubes within 24 hours if not fertilized.

In humans, the few days near ovulation constitute the fertile phase. The average time of ovulation is the fourteenth day of an average length (twenty-eight day) menstrual cycle. It is normal and common for the day of ovulation to vary from the average, however.

Cycle length alone is not a reliable indicator of the day of ovulation. While in general an earlier ovulation will result in a shorter menstural cycle, and vice versa, the luteal (post-ovulatory) phase of the menstrual cycle may vary by up to a week between women.

THERE IS NO "SAFE" TIME TO HAVE UNPROTECTED SEX IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE A PARENT! SHE NEEDS TO KNOW WHEN SHE IS OVULATING SO YOU CAN ABSOLUTELY AVOID THAT TIME...KEEP IN MIND SPERM CAN LIVE FOR UP TO 5 DAYS INSIDE OF HER.
The only way for you to know if you are ovulating is to take your basal body temp each morn, same time and before you get up. You should see a pattern in temps that leads up to and after ovulation. You can get the basal thermometer at Wal-Mart for about 8 dollars. I use a wonderful FREE website called Fertilityfriend.com...it graphs your temps for you, keeps track of your fertility signs, tells you when you ovulate and also tells you if there is an implantation dip in your temps. You can also use Ovulation prediction kits, but they only measure your LH surge and give you a ball park time for ovulation...they do not pin point it. Oh, and it is possible to be ovulating while you do not have your period, just like it is possible to have a period and not ovulate.
