Does anyone have an idea for a science lesson on water as animals homes. It's for a 2nd grade class. I've been brainstorming on possibilities, but haven't found something that would engage them. Basically, the lesson deals with them understanding how water provides a home for some animals. I thought about them developing a pond and adding animals that would live there..Im kind of confused..ideas?

you could do some brainstorming on animals that live in the water... Beavers, otters, walruses, platypuses(sp?), perhaps even look into sea lions, seals, maybe penguins.
Give students a basic graphic organizer
* name of animal
* type of home they live in (they could describe or draw)
* How the animal uses their home
* food they eat
After modeling how to fill in the Graphic organizer.... you could research or have students work in teams with books, the internet, or printed off info from the net.
A good website for second graders would be enchantedlearning.com

I did a virtual field trip to a site from Canada that 3rd graders put together. It was a really really neat site though because you got to see microscopic life too!! just by ckicking on the animal it gave you a close up look and bio!! Sorry I don't have the exact web address but you could do a search for it easily.

See if you can get a video on sea life. How about an auuarium or field trips to nearby lake river or pond.
