A neighbor of mine has a '90's Crown Victoria he has had for quite a while. The transmission on it died quite a while ago, and he wants to sell the car... *pout*. I want to get it replaced for him (and possibly for myself...). Would it be worth my time to replace it (I can get a trannie that will work for $40 if I pull it for myself...)?

It's not that hard as long as you have the proper tools and a place to do it.Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable from the battery, then raise and support the car at all four corners with jack stands not jacks high enough to drop the tranny out when its unbolted on a side post lift would be idea, then disconnect and remove the drive shaft and any lines, linkage and electrical connectors from the tranny, place a jack (either a special tranny jack or a floor jack with a couple of two x fours across the lift pad) under the trannys pan and remove any bolts holding the tranny to the back of the engine then remove the inspection cover on the front of the trannys bellhousing if it's there and remove the bolts that hold the torque converter to the flexplate/flywheel (you will have to rotate the torque converter to access all the bolts) then with the jack supporting the tranny unbolt and remove the tranny crossmember and lower the old tranny out and reverse the remove instructions to put the new one back in.WITH A HELPER AND PROPER TOOLS YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO THE SWAP IN ABOUT 2-3 HOURS

It is not that hard, Depends on the exhaust system you may have to drop it down to get it out. Remove the 4 torque convertor bolts and tranny bolts and crossmember and 2 cooler lines

I don't think it will be that hard provided you have the proper jack to lift the tran, cause it's awfully darn HEAVY. I also think you should buy the Chilton Auto Repair Guide for that particular car, cause it can give you instructions. It will also give instructions for EVERY THING else on the car. It's worth the $15. Most any auto parts store. Or try Haynes, they're good too.

I ALWAYS buy a repair manual for all my cars, cause I usually do all my own repairs.
