Intel is faster right now, and not just by a little bit. And as for inexpensive, a $300 Core 2 Duo outperforms a $900 FX-62, so I would say go with Intel. As for the Quad Cores, yeah they are coming out in December for about $1000, if you wanna spend that much. And just so no one can argue, here are benchmarks:http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html

The latest Core 2 Duo chips from Intel are the top of the line right now. AMD and Intel often battle it out for top position and who's on top goes back and forth, but right now the Core 2's are on top.
You can see a detailed benchmark comparison here: http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/08/02/thg_tuning_test/

first of all, you should wait until at least december, because quad core processors by intel and amd are coming out, but if you need one right now, the intel core2 duo is the fastest by a very small margin, but an amd with the same clock speed is a tiny bit cheaper and tends to run cooler and quieter

I have built many computers (not in a while now) and I know for fact that there is not much diff in either chip other then price. The Intel chip will cost more and the mother board will cost more because it is made for an intel chip. The AMD is just as fast and I never had any problems with them.

i'd say Intel, although the others havent.
Intel simply have the best technology. an AMD may be identicle to an Intel on the spec, but the Intel will perform the best

AMD is good. but u have to insert another fan for cooling it. I did not faced any problem with it and working excellent.
since 4 years I am working with it. Good, fast and reliable. While playing the games it shows excellent speed compared to intel
Go for AMD

I would say AMD cause prices and performance is excellent. Intel is just a name and performance is okay.
AMD socket 939 or AM2 processor are both good.
ASUS are a good manufacture for AMD boards. GSkill is good for memory (i got a stick of 512MB as of now). nVidia 6600 or above versions are good video cards.

Yes quad cores are coming out...but just a bit of advice.......dont buy first generation technology...wait until the second or third generation to buy that way they have any bug worked out and have refined the design (and they are cheaper by then
I learned that lesson the hard way when the 9800 pro came out. spent $500 on a card and the fan died the first time I fired it up
