what time do you put your older babies to bed? My ten month old goes to bed at 8:30 and sleeps through until about 7am. But, he seems really tired and always falls asleep with his bottle and I have to wake him so he can go to bed on his own (sleep training) at 8:30, is this too late?

Every baby has their own schedule and it sound like he is ready to go to bed a little earlier than you think. Try giving him his bottle an hour or 30 minutes earlier and see how that works. His sleep schedule may be changing, as far as his naps during the day so he may just need a little help readjusting. Info: my 19mo was going to bed at 7pm at this age and waking at 6 to 7 am with about 2 or 3 naps during the day.

All babies are different. He may be gowing in a spurt right now and need more sleep. Does he take naps? If not give him a early nap right after lunch time and only let him sleep 2 hours. This will help with the 8:30 bedtime. If he doesn't nap then yes he should be in bed at 7:30. Babies require 12 hours of sleep a day. It's up to your schedule how you break that down. It won't happen over night by it ususally takes a few days to get used to. Don't give up though or you'll teach him you don't mean what you say.

my son is now 16 months old but has been going to bed around 7:30 pretty much ever since he was a newborn.

You should try putting him to bed earlier than 8:30 but in increments. Start with putting him down at 8:15 and then make it earlier and earlier every 3-4 days. Eventually he'll get used to going to bed earlier.

Also make sure you have a routine every night that he knows means bedtime is coming. A bath, a book or just quiet play in his room.

As far as going to bed with the bottle, what I would do (if you can handle it) is to just do the routine and put him down without it. He'll probably cry but he needs to learn how to fall asleep on his own. Some people don't believe in letting the baby cry it out. It all depends on what you can handle. My personal belief is that if he's eaten, diaper is cleaned but you know he is tired then crying won't hurt him a bit. As long as you know all his needs are met and he's just crying in order to get what he wants.

If you can hack it out for a good few days then he will learn to fall asleep on his own. it will be worth it in the end.

Children who get enough sleep are less prone to behavior problems and moodiness. They often develop better memory, concentration, and longer attention spans. With plenty of sleep, they may also recover from illness faster. Growth spurts occur during sleep as the human growth hormone is released. Behavior problems can even result from lack of sleep.
While children may seem anything but sleepy at bedtime, they still may be. Their bouncing around the room behavior may be masking sleep deprivation. How much is enough sleep? Two year olds normally need 13 hours of sleep a day, including naps. By age five, 11 hours is the average amount needed. School aged children need about 10 hours of sleep. Most teenagers need a good 9 hours of sleep at night to be alert during the day.

It seems that you have a well adjusted and happy baby! That means he has a good mom! Congrats!

My ten month old goes to bed at 7 or 7:30. The first sign that he is tried I put him to bed. He usually plays for a little bit in his crib then falls asleep on his own. He wakes up about 7:30am.

My son is almost 10 months old and his bedtime is consistently 10:00pm...he takes a short nap around 5pm but no matter what I've tried, this is his bedtime...he sleeps til 7am to nurse, then goes back to sleep until 9am...you can set your clock to his schedule. Other people have told me this is late, but this is what it is for now. Stay tuned to your son's signs...try even 15 min. earlier and see if this helps him to sleep on his own.

a bedtime for a 10 month old is wonderful. i wish i had done that with my first 2 children. letting them go to bed when ever he wants can cause a problem when he gets older. he'll probably try to run all over you and make you crazy. putting him down at 8;30 is a perfect time. i don't think its to late because if you lay him down any earlier he may wake up earlier. is that what you want. mabey you can try it a few nights and see the outcome.

Well obviously if he is falling asleep before 8:30 it's too late for him.

8:30 is a little late for that age...my 13 month old takes a 3 hour nap every afternoon and can barely stay awake past 7pm each night.

Every baby is different. If your baby appears to be needing more sleep then try an earlier time. If not then don't stress! You are the mom and you know best!
