What is his official title, and why didn't he become king (as her spouse)? Does he ever appear in the press? I never seem to hear about him.

He was born Phillip Mountbatten but upon his marriage to then Princess Elizabeth, he was made the Duke of Edinburgh. When she ascended the throne, he became a Peer of the Realm, thus the royal style His Royal Highness.

He cannot be known as King, because that would mean he is the Sovereign. He only married into the Royal Family although he is related to the former Greek Royal House.

The reason he doesn't appear in the press is because everytime he opens his mouth, he makes a fool of himself. He is known to be somewhat rude as he still clings to the old school of thought, where Royals looked upon themselves as masters and the public, their servants and subjects.

Queen Elizabeth's husband is Prince Phillip, and his official title is Prince Consort.
When the reigning monarch is a man, he is titled King and his wife is given the courtesy title Queen. But when the reigning monarch is a woman, she is titled Queen and her husband is given the courtesy title Prince.
The reason for this is that in the heirarchy of royalty, Kings rank ahead of Queens, and if Philip were to be given the title King, it would mean he was ranked ahead of Queen Elizabeth.
The same conditions held true for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, her husband.
Interestingly enough, the Ancient Egyptians had a similar problem but solved it a little differently.
When a female was queen, such as Nefertiti was, she was referred to as a man and wore a mock beard at official appearances. This created enormous difficulties when the archaeologists and Egyptologists first began exploring the ancient Egyptian civilization, as the same person appeared to be referred to as both a man and a woman. Later, the reason became more evident.
But I don't think Queen Elizabeth would look good wearing a beard, so it's just as easy to call her husband Prince Philip. He's usually on hand when she makes public appearances, but does stay in the background, out of the limelight.
He does appear in the press fairly regularily, when he puts his foot in his mouth and makes an 'unregal' statement.

A woman automatically obtains status from her husband, but a husband does not. He had to be specially created both a Duke and a UK Prince after his marriage, whereas a woman who marries into the royal family has a title as soon as they are married. The husbands of peeresses in their own right have no titles either. Only William and Mary (whose reign began in 1689) were joint king and queen regnant, as opposed to king and queen consort.

If you are wondering what he is doing, the court circular in the Times or Telegraph lists what they do each day, or look at www.royal.gov.uk. He is 85 so can be forgiven for slowing down.

because of the fact he's not the king. he's in the line of succession, yet, nicely down the checklist - in the 50's someplace. So, the Queen and 50 astonishing human beings might desire to die for him to become king. In maximum places, inclusive of the united kingdom, a woman can use a courtesy style of the guy's call and contact, yet, it would not artwork any incorrect way around. hence omit Sally Jones can use the call Mrs John Smith after she marries. in a similar way omit Sally Jones can become Princess John if she marries a prince. yet, if the Queen married a commoner, he could be an consumer-friendly Mister. in actuality, Phillip gave up his distant places titles to marry Elizabeth, and became given the Dukedom via King George. Elizabeth created him a Prince of the united kingdom 10 years after their marriage. If those 2 issues weren't achieved, he could be a Mister to on the present time.

Officially he is Prince consort.
He also holds the title Duke of Edinburgh.
He does not have the title King because this is regarded as a title higher then queen and he is not above the queen.

As said Philip was of royalty before he married Elizabeth. I think he actually had to give up his title in order to marry her, but I guess he felt that was better since he would be fathering the next future King or Queen of England.

Its just the way their monarch, if a man takes the throne his wife will become Queen. But if a woman becomes Queen her husband will not become King.

Born Phillip Mountbatton (a Prince of Greece and Denmark), he was titled The Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich by King George VI the day before his wedding to Princess Elisabeth of England on 20 November 1947.

HRH Elisabeth elevated her husband to a Prince of the United Kingdom in 1957 to restore the princely status he had abdicated prior to his wedding.

There are a TON of other titles including "Colonel-in-Chief" of just about every bloody regiment !!

He didn't become KING... because the line of succession runs through Elisabeth and HER family. There was also the slightly sticky bit that members of HIS family were of the German Nobility... not the best thing just following World War II.

All in all... from what I've seen, read, and heard... a gentleman I'd like to chat with.

Prince Philip or Duke of Edinburgh.
He can't be king because he is not in line for the throne.
He used to appear in the press but he's been told to shut up because he revealed contempt for other races which got the royal family bad publicity.

Oueen Elizabeth's husband is Prince Philip and he holds that title because he is married to the royal family...and is not heir to the throne...so he holds the title of prince only because his wife is the queen and part of the royal family.
