this is what I remember
they basically wanted to do what America did (supposedly), liberty for everyone
think about that what kind of started the French Revolution was that they had to pay for our Revolution
It wasn't fair, that between USA and Britain, that we won, and the French helped us, but we turned traitor and they had to pay the whole bill for the war
the ones who were forced to pay were the serfs, the Commoners- which is the Third Estate. Because the Clergy had power and was friends with the Nobility, also owned land, and made the Commoners pay very high expenses in church.
The Nobility owned land too, and the serfs had to work that land, but they really didn't get much from it, and were dirt poor.
When France got the bill for the war, who do you think ended up having to pay for it?
So they had had it up to here, and they are the ones who started the rebellions, they started riots over bread, over many other basic goods.
They went up to King Louis's front porch and demanded changes.
by the time the Directory came, the Commoner had most of the vote, and overruled the Clergy, and the Nobility.
that had rights similar to our Bill of Rights
the Commoners got to be represented and recognized in government votes and decisions
men got to vote (but women did not) and it was mostly the men with some bankroll
one thing they had with us is Fraternity- because they remembered what it was like when they had to help each other fight for food, the idea was that, if one person suffers, everybody suffers. That is not necessarily an "individualistic" idea, so to speak.
another thing they did was that the Jews could no longer stay in a separate part of the country and not have to pay taxes and otherwise participate in their own government. In essence, be their own country. To stay there, they had to abide by the rules of the other citizens.
Other sects of Christianity were chastized still, and there was bias towards them in government, and anything else.
Slavery, originally, they wanted to end it, and there are essays for against it and everything that were written that are probably on the web. But they were financially dependent upon it, with all their colonies in the West Indies and such so they closed their eyes.
Gay peoples were continuing to be killed, burned, maimed, and literature was being written in protest with allusions to the horrible state
Women pushed for legislation that would better their treatment in the home and outside the home (e.g. make it possible for them to be active in voting and government affairs) but that was futile, especially when Robes-Pierre came in
Robes-Pierre started the Terror, to scare his people into obedience and out of rebellion, and to scare foreign countries from trying to control france. It was very bad, but it worked
otherwise, look on www.wikipedia.com

initially, the objective became only the introduction of constrained monarchy extra or much less equivalent to the only that super Britain had. the 1st efforts have been summoning of the assembly(Estates conventional) and making it function in this way of way that the commons enjoyed extra desirable powers. It became the contest of the King and the the Aristocracy to those comfortable reforms that made the commons turn violent and hotel to extremism.

they got rid of the aristocrats that were ripping off the people and that was their goal.
In that respect they were successful.
Only to replace it with yet another one, That was just as bad and it still going today.
Nothing ever changes, It merely changes its looks.
