Why, in football, do t he officials always throw the ball back to the sidelines underhanded?

It easier to make an accurate throw without the ball hitting the ground and going awry, which could disrupt the game or make it look unprofessional.

It is a rule in the secret society of football officials...they can be kicked out of the club if they follow the rules.

It makes it easier for the other official to catch it.

Because he's not a player. Only players are licensed to throw a ball overhand during an NFL game.
