You shouldn't be ashamed to accept welfare on a temporary basis. You should be ashamed if you make it a crutch and are able to work.

I feel that welfare is something to be used by those who truly need it, and I'm a healthy person who can find a job working as a server if it were necessary. There's no reason for me to be on welfare, and I just don't think I could do it. It's a point of personal pride, and I'm not ashamed to feel that way.

You definitely should NOT be ashamed. People are because of all the BS out there about people on welfare. Most recipients are off within a year or two. Most are children and many are disabled or elderly. By the way, people on welfare PAY TAXES. They shop, use gas, have utility bills, etc.

Living on welfare isn't a way of life. It's only a mean to help you temporarily. Some people, however, think they're entitled to receiving it for life.
If everyone thinks the way you do, then you're going to pay taxes.
Be ashamed !

Even though I have always paid taxes,I was ashamed-for a time. Then, after reading comments from the stupid people that negatively answer questions like this and don't even bother to see if it makes sense(why would I want someone to "food on my table"?),I realize that there are better things to be ashamed of instead of getting a hand up while I try to find a decent job in a community where it's not what you know, but whom.By the way,I've not been on it for quite some time, but I would not be ashamed if I had to get help to feed my kids. It's not about being lazy.Yes,people abuse it,but people abuse this site by giving answers on subject they know nothing about.

It because welfare seems to be a word that goes together with words like, dead beat, loser, lazy ..... you get the idea. When honest people need to draw welfare they don't want other people lumping them into the same group. Too many families have been on welfare for generations. Its a way of life they don't intend to change.

Because of the majority of public opinion. Ever notice comments in a grocery store when someone pulls out a food stamp card? They've made them so they look like credit or debit cards, but you can always tell who is using one because they have to pay cash for certain things.
I've been on public assistance before because I was homeless and was going through a terrible time in my life many years ago.
Many people judge others without knowing the facts, which are really none of their business.
Since we pay into the taxpayer system, why are ppl ashamed to get services for the government? That's what they are there for.

Because I am fiercly independant and take pride in providing for my family. And yes,for three months in 1976 I did collect A.D.C.U.F. I found a new job and tried to return the last check. I was then put under investigation for fraud. NO CHARGES. Great system right? Try to do the right thing and your villified.I vowed then, never again!!Never have!!

I have worked since I was 12. A few years ago when I had to take over the care of my grand-daughter and my dying son, I was denied food stamps in Arizona. A very rude employee told me I'd have to sell my car to be eligile. Since then they have deleted the car value rule. I was embarrassed to even go to the welfare office. But my thinking has turned a 180 since seeing foreigners well dressed with basketsful of groceries using an EBT card. I'd gladly go to the welfare office now, if necessary.
