It depends on the person. Some people are very hard on themselves, they torture themselves over the smallest and most petty mistakes and make their own lives a living hell by not taking things easy. On the other side, some people never question themselves or the validity of their actions, and end up being selfish and insensitive jerks that only care about their personal welfare and harm everybody else around them.
Both extremes are bad.
We should measure ourselves with the same ruler that we measure others, and we should learn to forgive and understand both their mistakes and ours.

Really? My friend criticizes my work all the time yet she never bothers to take the time to look at her own work and find her mistakes.

And to make it worse, we usually criticize in others what we secretly most despise in ourselves.... so that's a double whammy.... oh great....
