Buy the new Intel Core 2 Duo processors. A very good one that I purchased last week ago was the Core 2 Duo e6400. It is ~$224 (www.newegg.com). It is very fast, reliable, and cheap. The e6300 is good too, but not as fast as the 6400. The price difference between the e6300 and e6400 is ~ $44, so if you have the extra cash, then get the e6400, if not then the e6300 is good also. The e6600 is good as well because of the extra cache and speed, but for the ~$100 difference and cache, it is not worth it. You can overclock your e6300/e6400 and achieve same or better speeds.
