I just inherited a very nice couch from my grandmother. It is in great condition, but has been in a basement for the past 6 months and has a strong musty smell. I've been using extra strength Febreze on it, but didn't know if anyone had any great secrets out there on how to get rid of the smell. Thanks!

this sounds like a job for a pro, if you call sears or another carpet/ upholstery cleaning place they will come to your house & clean it professionally, usually with a guarantee, so if it still smells they come back & clean it again for free!

I just got a used couch from my SIL and I had the same problem! I rented a steam cleaner w/ the attachments and steam cleaned it, then I used Fabreeze everyday for three days! Now it smells fresh!

Try spraying with a lysol spray. I was going to say don't use Febreze if you have pets. If they get it on their fur and lick the fur there is a chance your pets could die from it. I found this out as a volunteer at an animal shelter.

I'd probably try a combination of all the above, then put it outside in the sun to air out. Don't know what kind of material it is, but if you can, try using a carpet cleaner attachment to clean it too.

I would try sprinkling it with baking soda all over and leave it set there for a few hours then use a dust buster or shop vac to sweep it up....after that I would spray some frebreeze on it.

Hope that helps!

you could try sprinkling carpet fresh (pet odour) on it , leaving it, and then vacuuming.
This is really good at getting rid of odours in general.
Try it on an inconspicuous spot first, to make sure it doesn't effect the look of the couch.

Febreeze it after you have gotten some upholstery cleaner and went over it very softly.

give this one a shot.... (sunny conditions) put your couch out side for a few hours left the cushions so they are not on one side.

You might have to re-upohlster(did i spell that right?) the whole thing or have a professional come in to clean it.
