I bought a bushnell 78 7880 from a second hand store, i only paid 20 dollars for it and its in perfect shape with the exception of missing parts. I have enough to view the moon but I want to see mars and a few other things. does anyone have any idea where I could find a calendar of sorts for optimal viewing in indiana?

I like the yoursky web site. Unfortunately most of the planets are in bad locations for viewing right now. You can see Saturn just before dawn, but that is about it for now. Saturn will be in the evening sky by March or so.

Try the link below. I'm sure there will be people there who are more than willing to help a beginner. Astronomy is a wonderful hobby.

Sky and Telescope's web site is handy, NASA's web site can be helpful, and there are a lot of online places to get sky info.

www.skymaps.com has a nice monthly map on their download page....

it lists things of importance and viewable objects by seeing... naked eye, binoculars, telescope...

Also try to find a local astronomy club... they love to help new people..

Good seeing... astronomy term for clear skies and a good observation night

I use skymaps as well once you register they will send you regular updates with obserbations of interest for the month.

The best thing is it's free!
