Okay, if you are in the water constantly and douche or shower before hand, you would be fine. However if you don't douche or shower to clean yourself, you may have residual "leaks" that sneak out as you kick around. If you are in and out of the water, there is no choice but a tampon or risk red leaks down your legs.
Frankly, this is the 21st century and you really should fight your mom on this one. Chances are when she was growning up they didn't have mandatory swimming in school. At least not in a crystal clear pool. Quite frankly it is pretty disgusting to think of swimming behind you if your on your period. Gross. Have your doctor talk to your mom at least on the "sex vs tampon" issue. Ignorance in it's finest. Worst case scenario. Buy a box and store in your locker. IN cases like this, what she doesn't know won't hurt her and it helps keep you from some mortifyingly embarassing situations.

It would depend on what type of bathing suit you want to wear. If you want a bikini then I would say you will have to not go into the pool.
If you are wearing a full suit you may consider an adult diaper with a pair of plastic pants over them before you put your suit on. It would help to contain things as long as you didn't stay in the water too long. I really wouldn't want to be in a pool with someone that is having their period and aren't using any kind of protection. I can just visualize all your discharge mixing in with the pool water that everyone else is sharing with you. You may just want to stay out of the water and socialize with your friends or reschedule the get together for a week later or a week earlier for a time you aren't having a period.
Good luck.

if you have ever taken a bath during your period you would notice that you don't bleed while in the tub, but my mom used to clean herself extreamly well down there and then go swimming. or you could do like somoen else suggests and buy a box of tampons and hide them at school, or if your afraid of your mom catching you do that, ask a friend to buy some for you and hide them at school.but tampon not always required. my step sis used to wear a normal pad while swimming. not the most comphtorable i imagine but it might work. just make sure to have extra stuff for you. stupid gym classes for doing that. there was a girl on my swim team with the same problem.

Hey, do what you think you need to do. As for your mom, talk to her and let her know that you respect her beliefs and traditions, but that this is an issue for your PE class and your teacher's stringency. Also talk to your PE teacher (if you're comfortable about it) and let her know your problem - perhaps she'll let you make up practices after you're off your cycle? Or maybe a letter from your mom could convince her. But I wouldn't go breaking your mother's trust, she's your mom; but you may need to have someone else talk to her to get her to see things your way.
As far as the physical side goes - you can get away with being on your period without tampons. I did for a couple years before I started wearing them. It is true that you don't bleed or bleed as much while you're in the shower. The water pressure helps with that, but usually the change in pressure with release blood right after you get out. You can hide any leaks that happen by going to the bathroom right before you go out on deck, getting in the water as soon as possible, wearing a towel/shorts, and getting to the lockerroom as soon as possible. And regardless of what notions guys may have - you don't bleed that much in the pool, you can't see it, your suit will catch any leaks and slowly disolve them, and chlorine kills all.
One other note - before I started wearing tampons I had this box of "nSync" (can't remember for sure). They were little pieces of cotton that fit between the labia but never actually "go in" anywhere. I have not seen them sold anywhere in years, I think somebody told me they were from Canada, but I'm not sure. They weren't 100% leakproof, but they worked 99% of the time!

I would explain to your mom the situation with gym class. Try to explain that you respect the tradition she still believes in and make an agreement that you will only use tampons on days that you have swimming. Gym is required in your education after all, right? Make sure she knows that.

No, you cannot swim with your period without a tampon without hygiene concerns for everyone else. Tampons are sfae to use if you follow the recommendations in the package. They are more sanitary than pads. You don't have to have sex in order to use them. The mentrual odor lessens with tampon use. Educate your mom.

It is NOT hygenic if you swim during your period without wearing tampons. If all else fails, go out and buy a box of tampons and keep it in school. There is instructions in it on how to use them.
