you can get pregnant at any time if you have unprotected sex. Although it would be rare to concieve so soon after giving birth - I personally know several women who have children only 10 or 11 months apart in age.

Alright, first, let me dispell a few myths.

1-You can NOT get pregnant the same day you give birth. You do not ovulate that soon, and your uterus is in no way healed enough to support a growing fetus.
2-Breastfeeding does NOT make you MORE fertile. Breastfeeding actually can delay ovulation. This is the body's natural birth control to allow a mother to heal during her nursing time.
3-Breastfeeding does NOT guarantee infertility. It is a possibility that it may delay ovulation, not a sure thing.

Alright, now some facts for you.....

1-You are fertile before your first period after birthing a child.
2-You may become pregnant as early as 2-3 weeks after giving birth. Your afterbirth bleeding will probably have stopped for this to be possible though.
3-Not only does it delay ovulation, but because of the delay of ovulation, breastfeeding can also stop you from having a period for the duration of your nursing.

Moral of the story...Yes, you may be pregnant again. Take a test and see your doctor.

I've been told by our doctor that after giving birth to our first child, we should refreign from intercourse for at least 6 weeks. It gives the body time to heal and would give my wife an excuse to say "not tonight honey" The truth of the matter is that you can conceive a child as soon as you start ovulating. So if you don't want to, use whatever means of birth control you've previously has success with

WELL...I have a son who was born July 11, 1992 and another son who was born May 28, 1993...I was pregnant when I went to my 6 weeks check up...

To answer your question: you can get pregnant even while you are still bleeding after giving birth...be careful...follow the instructions your doctor gave you about NO SEX...

I ended up having another baby but at the expense of my uterus...I had to have a partial hystorectomy...

Please be safe and extremely careful.

You can get pregnant the day you give birth if you have intercourse. We were told this by a nurse in birthing classes.

But really, give your body a chance to recuperate, give your mind a chance to unwind. The baby you have at hand needs allot of attention and that will take energy.

And if the guy your with can not understand you need to wait that time through for you and your body...then he is very selfish.

For each woman it is different but most of the time they wait a few months to a year to heal, etc and take the advice of their doctor. It can be as soon as 3 weeks after birth though.

See this:

You can have sex as soon as you and your partner want to. However, having a baby causes many physical and emotional changes for both partners, and it may take some time before you feel ready to have sex. It is common to feel nervous, but there is usually no reason why you should not enjoy sex just as much as before. It can help if you and your partner talk about any worries you have.

If you have any discomfort which might affect your enjoyment of sex, such as stitches which have not healed, discuss this with your midwife, GP, nurse, or health visitor. You might want to use a vaginal lubricant if you are uncomfortably dry. If you are using latex (rubber) condoms, a diaphragm or cap you will need to use water-soluble lubricants like KY jelly and Senselle, as oil-based products such as baby oil and Vaseline will damage the rubber.

When will my periods start again?

If you bottlefeed, or combine bottle and breastfeeding, your first period could start as early as 5–6 weeks after the birth. If you are breastfeeding, your periods may not come back until you stop. However, you can be fertile before you get your first period. This is because you ovulate (release an egg) about 2 weeks before a period.

How soon do I need to use contraception?

You can become pregnant again quickly after the birth, so it’s a good idea to think about which method of contraception you are going to use before you have sex again.

You need to use contraception from 3 weeks (21 days) after the birth. Don’t wait for your periods to return, or until you have your postnatal check, before you use contraception as you could get pregnant again before then.

f you are fully breastfeeding you can choose to rely on this for contraception. (See Will breastfeeding act as a contraceptive?.

Yes Ma'am, unless you are breast feeding you will ovulate in about 2 weeks after birth. Breast feeding delays ovulation. Yet another reason to breast feed for a while. I did not need birth control after my child was born but I think you should ask your doc and get started soon. It is harmful for your body to get pregnant again too soon.

if you didn't go to you 6 weeks check up i recommend you make a new appointment and go... that check up is just to make sure your uterus went back to its original size..... and you have no complication after giving birth.....
you can get pregnant as soon as your period comes back... because that means your ovulating again.
