Cover 2 is a type of defense used by the other team. Instead of playing man to man its more of a zone type defense where you defend a certain part of the field.

Zone defense where the two safeties cover the deep portion of the field, splitting it in half. Depending on whether you're in a 4-3 or a 3-4, usually the 3 or 4 linebackers and the 2 corners cover the middle of the field pretty much 5 wide.

It's a defensive formation in which 2 players (normally the safeties) play the deep portion of the field. Each player is responsible for one side of the field, either the left or right side.

The goal of the formation is to not allow any deep passes. Short plays are allowed, but the deep players will come up and stop the play before it turns into a big play.

Hope it helps.
