how can he be a dictator? he won elections, and - unlike Bush - had more than 50% of the vote both times.
he is popular because he stands up for the poor. calling him a dictator is just an insult because he stands up to the US (Bush). the US needs his oil much more than he needs them. there is no shortage of nations who'd buy it if the US didn't.

Chavez won the popular vote. Got to wonder when nobody runs against you and you win by 95% May not be a dictator in the traditional sense, but telling people to steal things from rich people will not help him (or the country) in the long run either. When all the industrialist and businesses move out of Venezuela, he will continue to blame the problems of the country on the U.S. Eventually things will get so bad that there is nothing else to do except attack the U.S. (The U.S. media will then ask "What did we do to make Venezuela hate us?)

I would not listen to many of these answers especially the anti-Bush ones. Because they are lacking information. Bush did win over %50 of the popular vote in 2004 and was the only one to do that since his father in 1988.
Anyway Chavez has taken complete control of the police, industry, military and put in puppets to run these organizations. Hitler won his election too but was he a dictator? Of course he was he dictated the fate of the country just like Chavez is doing now.

What are you talking about? Are you saying that Hugo Chavez is NOT the dictator of Venezuela and that the media is making it up? Do you realize how foolish that sounds? I was off the coast of Venezuela once and they advised us not to get off the ship because it was too dangerous. It was so bad that the cruise line stopped going there. I'm not surprised that Chavez is president there now.

That Chavez is a dictator is in the same category as saying Reagan ended the cold war, or that Bush did not know that the WoMD propaganda was lies.
But the current US gouvernment's credo seems to be that people will swallow the most outrageous lies if you tell them often and loudly enough.
The really horrible thing is that it seems they are right.

Anyone still trying to claim Chavez wasn't s dictator is beyond pathetic in their dishonesty, but what do you expect from totalitarian socialist pigs who are still trying to claim Stalin and Mao were saints?

Isn't President Chavez exchanging oil for political assistance from London's Mayor Livingstone? That doesn't sound like an evil didtator when you think what others have done for oil.

if venezuelan peoplesay he is not a dictator then obviously he`s not .it amazes me how many Americans seem to believe that they know more about every country in the world than the people who live there do not to metion what those peoples thoughts are and the way they want to live.and what amazes me more is how America even has a different version of history than the rest of us andi`m sure that if America dosn`t want to buy venezuelan oil plenty of other countries will be more than happy to take it off their hands

How can he be a dictator when, unlike Bush,he was democratically elected with a majority vote?
But he better watch out.Venezuela is the 4th largest supplier of oil to the US.and we will know how much GWB loves his oil.Guess it's his Texas upbringing.

The big oil company's here in America are angry because Chavez helped some poor people in this country with there heating bills last winter. something American oil company's wouldn't do even with their record profits. people here that praise bush don't like him because he speaks his mind about bush. so as long as the bush regime is in office you will see negative stuff about any high profile person that speaks out against bush or big oil or what ever else the bush regime supports.
