Put them in a fruit bowl or paper bag. If you put them with ripe tomatoes or bananas and apples it will speed up the process -- the ripe ones emit more ethylene gas --- never refrigerate

Put them in a brown paper bag with some apples. Plants release a chemical called ethylene, that causes their fruit to ripen. Apples release ethylene, so this will cause the tomatoes to ripen.

Tomatoes will ripen over time. Usually a well lit warm place (near sunlight) works best. Check them periodically to see if they have ripened.

The idea is to wrap them in newspaper and let them ripen in the dark. I don't know why you can't just put them on the windowsill.
