Each computer/laptop has it's own Mac address. The mac address is a fixed serie code. It will identify the laptop in use and can be tracked. However, few people will bother to do that though.
The best is to turn it over to the police and report the person's doings.
If you really like the laptop, reformat the whole system with a new version of Xp/linux. That's because his laptop might be full of spywares....etc. from these shock sites. Woohoo! You have a new laptop for use....

You have really got to be kidding. You friend has committed a crime. A felony, with a possible two to ten years in prison attached. By keeping the laptop, you're committing a crime, with a possible one to five attached. The fact you stole the laptop from a homosexual has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on this. It is still a crime (and a darn sleazy thing to do).
If you want to do the proper thing, return the laptop to it's rightful owner immediately. If you're not willing to do that, take it to the nearest police station and tell them where it came from. If they ask how you got it, say a friend stole it and you want it returned (you can refuse to name of the friend).
However, if you would rather not do the proper thing and still insist on keeping the laptop, don't expect anyone here of reasonable intelligence to be an accessory by enabling you to cover up your crime.
Reply to Additional Details: Look, I don't care if the guy is Jack the Ripper. That still doesn't give YOU the right to commit a crime against him. If you want to do something about a pedophile, report him to the police. You do not have the right to take the law into your own hands, or break the law to simply enrich yourself (which the latter is exactly what you're doing with the laptop).
By the way, sorry if you feel this is a "pansy" answer. However, your aggressive attempts to negatively characterize others who disagree with you only shows you would have not hesitate to do the same to someone else if it benefits you - such as falsely characterizing the person you stole the laptop from as a pedophile.

I would wash it with bleach , first. Then enjoy your new laptop! You could put an add in a newspaper - ( try one two or three counties away) that says found laptop... or turn into the police - but unless you don't want to keep it then you should delete all the memory first ( if they find gay porn or child porn etc...then they will more than likely blame you ) Plus be sure your "friend" is telling the truth or be willing to do time for him. Buy new and delete old programs , or sell it and do yourself a favor!!!

well... since youre probably not going to do the right thing and turn it in, and since youve already knowingly bought stolen property theres no use in trying to lecture. just take off the sticker that has a bunch of numbers and reflective crap on there. thats the registration for the microsoft windows. while you have it on they will be able to trace you with satellites and theres nothing you can do. so youre running a risk right now.

If you don't know who the true owner is...
1) Contact the makers of the laptop
2) Give them the serial number
3) Try to have them contact the true owner
4) Gotta give it to the cops and accept the fact that you just threw away some money

Get a life for one, and just give the laptop back. Oh, and the slurs are considered hate speech, so when you get caught with the laptop you might not want to include them in your statement with the police.

give it back -- to where it came from. or just bring it to the police station -- and mark on top of it "stolen property, please return" -- it is very easy to trace stolen property since some of the programmes are registered to the owner of the computer. you don't need another answer -- you just need to run to the first station around.
